有些英语学习者觉得学习和记忆英语词汇太枯燥乏味,因而产生畏难情绪,影响了他们学习英语的积极性和效果。
由于英语和汉语分别属于两种不同的语系,差异很大,要学好英语词汇的确不容易。不过,尽管如此,不是所有的英语词汇都是枯燥无味的。相反,有些英语词汇,而且应该说有相当数量的英语词汇具有鲜明、生动、具体的形象。你一看到它们,只要稍加思考,理解它们包含的形象,就会在脑中产生联想,留下深刻印象,而难以忘记它们。下面就是一些这样的词汇:
walk-in patient门诊病人(门诊病人大多能走着去就诊)
walk-up无电梯公寓(既然无电梯,就只好walk up,即walk upstairs之意。注意walk-up后面没有apartment一词或别的表示建筑物的词汇。)
wage ceiling最高工资限额(用ceiling“天花板”表示最高限额,形象生动。)
chalk and talk注入式教学法(习惯于满堂灌的老师授课时总是讲呀,板书呀,而忽略了学生的参与。用 chalk and talk来表示此意十分形象。)
ozone-friendly product不损害臭氧层的产品(ozone-friendly比not damaging ozone既简洁又形象。)
twilight home养老院(twilight一词既可指“曙光”,也可指“黄昏,黄昏时的光线”。twilight在这个词组中指的是“黄昏”,也就是我们常说的“夕阳”的意思。)
floating voter无党派投票人(无党派的人没有党派归属感。floating一词使人联想到在水面漂来漂去的浮萍,用它来喻指“无党派”,妙不可言。)
cram school补习学校(cram一词意为“把……塞进……”,其引申义指的是“用填鸭式方法教学生”。在补习学校中一般都要采用此种教法方能有成效。)
cradle-to-grave protection一生的保护(用cradle-to-grave“从摇篮到坟墓”表示a whole life,生动、具体、形象。这个词组还可表示“自始至终的”,如cradle-to-grave control自始至终的管理。)
类似上面的形象化词汇在英语中还有很多很多。这里有以下三点需要说明:
1 形象化词汇是整个英语词汇量(《国际新韦氏英语大辞典》已收录了四十五万个英语词汇)中一个不可分割的组成部分,是在英语漫长的发展过程中逐渐形成的。我们作为英语学习者在英语还学得不很好的时候一般不宜生造或杜撰这种词汇,而应当细心观察,多发现、学习这种词汇。
2 不要随意改变形象化词汇的结构。例如:不要把walk-up改成walk-upstairs,不要把chalk and talk改成talk and chalk。
3 有些形象化词语中的某个组成成分可用于其它搭配中,如environment-friendly approach“不损害环境的对策”。不过,就形象化英语词汇而言,这种情况只是少数,不具备普遍意义。
