在秃鹫夫妇的精心照料下，当孵卵到快55天的时候，小秃鹫出壳了。从此，雌秃鹫便成了秃鹫妈妈，雄秃鹫便成了秃鹫爸爸。
为了看护幼小的孩子，以防还不懂事的孩子从大树上掉下去摔伤，从这一天开始，秃鹫妈妈便不再外出觅食，而为一家三口寻找食物的重任就落在了秃鹫爸爸的身上。
每天，秃鹫爸爸总是早出晚归，给妻子和孩子寻找可吃的食物。可是，秃鹫爸爸往往是在空中转上一两个小时也找不到一点可吃的食物。所以，无论是找到一只死兔子还是一只死老鼠，秃鹫爸爸都会不辞辛苦地给妻子和孩子送回家去。

这样一来，不到一个月的时间，秃鹫爸爸和秃鹫妈妈就明显消瘦了。当小秃鹫长到100多天的时候，秃鹫夫妇已经是瘦骨嶙峋。
随着年龄的增长，小秃鹫渐渐懂事了。每当爸爸带回食物来，他都要妈妈跟他一起吃。而秃鹫妈妈也只是象征性的吃一点，便装作吃饱了，不再分食孩子的食物。
