When I entered the University of British Columbia (UBC), I naturally chose to specialize in Cell Biology and Genetics.

In my sophomore year at UBC, I first began to seriously consider dentistry as a career. At that time, I began to appreciate the important role that dentistry played in my life. Four years earlier, I began an orthodontic treatment program with Dr. Junni Wang to correct a severe crowding problem with my teeth. Both before and during the treatment, I was a most reluctant participant; not many teenagers look forward to braces filling their mouth during their last two years of high school, and I was no different.

However, at every monthly check-up for three-and-a-half years the office staff had nothing but kind words of encouragement and optimism. Now after the completion of the treatment I had reason to smile. Dr. Wang helped turn me from a shy adolescent who feared smiling into a confident, outgoing young man. His skills not only brought back my smile, but also my sense of confidence in all aspects of my life. Whereas once I feared drawing attention to myself and thus shied away from leadership posts and debates, now I am a completely different person. Hoping to feel as satisfied and gratified as Dr. Wang must have felt in improving not only my smile but my entire way of life, I look forward to improving the oral health of patients on a daily basis and participating in dentistry’ s friendly, team-oriented work environment.

After this preliminary ‘ patient-doctor’ exposure to dentistry, I substantially increased my involvement in the field to determine if dentistry really was for me. My participation with the UBC Pre-Dental Society allowed me to communicate with various professionals in the field. I also investigated opportunities to volunteer in the University Dental Clinic or participate in research work. After speaking to a couple of professors in the UBC Faculty of Dentistry asking them about research opportunities, I found a topic that interested me. Dr. Putnins, of the Division of Periodontics, offered me a position in his lab to conduct a semi-quantitative analysis to determine the levels of endotoxin in dental unit water lines.

After taking many water samples from the University Dental Clinic and quantifying the amounts of endotoxin (lipopolysaccahride) in those samples with an Limulus Abeocyte Lysate test, I prepared to publish dentistry’ s first account of this type of experiment. I conducted the study over a 16-week span (Jan.-Apr.‘ 98), and the research work counted as 3.0 credits towards my undergraduate degree. Because the vast majority of my work was self-directed, I submitted my findings for evaluation by the faculty in a 32-page report with 46 references, and I also defended my methods before a panel of professors. Impressed by the findings and results, Dr. Putnins will use my study as a key component of a journal article he is currently preparing for the Journal of Dental Research (JDR). The school also submitted an abstract of my findings for presentation at the upcoming 77th General Session of the International Association of Dental Research (IDAR) to be held at Vancouver, Canada. I am keenly looking forward to this unique opportunity to have my work appear before distinguished members of the dental research community. My positive research experience definitely helped reinforce my goal of becoming a dentist.

In addition, my employment as a Canada Customs Inspector has helped me improve my level of social awareness and helped me develop qualities I can usefully apply to dentistry. As a Customs Inspector, I had the opportunity to communicate effectively with many different types of people in various situations. I have also developed the ability to resolve conflicts, defuse difficult situations, and show empathy even during cases of enforcement. In addition, my experience with team sports has provided me with leadership skills that can not be taught in any textbook. As the captain of my hockey team and the coach of a children’ s team, I have developed excellent communication skills and the ability to identify and work effectively with kids. All of these qualities will prove very important to my future career in dentistry.

Attracted by the dental profession’ s ability to positively impact people’ s lives, just like my orthodontist, and by the profession’ s financially rewarding and stable lifestyle, I look forward to one day opening my own practice and becoming a well-respected member of both the community of dentists and the community of patients. While my GPA may not be as high as some applicants’ , my academic record shows a consistent positive. Extra-curricular activities have incorporated drama productions of Grease, the promotion of the School production of West Side Story as part of my Marketing unit and a heavy involvement in the preparation and publishing of our year 11 yearbook. From the age of seven I attended a Bury St Edmunds Gymnastics club and competed at County, Regional and National levels. 西班牙留学生活费用清单

一、住宿费

住校寄宿租房都不贵,一个月一般都不会超过400欧元,这里面还包括了大家日常用水用电上网等杂项开销，需要保证每个月按时缴纳房租,不然可能会导致不必要的麻烦。

大家可以享受单独的卧室,卫生间和淋浴房一般都是一起的,可能会需要和别人共用,而厨房一般只有公寓才会有,而公寓一般是合租,这样也需要和其他人一起使用,需要保证整洁。

二、保险费

除了基础的医疗险之外,有的学生还会购买牙险,留学生购买默认的项目是比较少的，要想惠及生活常用类型,需要单独自己购买,大部分每个月都集中20-40欧之间，-般的学生不会超过30欧。

三、交通费

基本.上都集中在20-30欧--个月,购买了交通卡的学生可以享受折扣,如果频率高的话可能需要40欧左右,当然也有不花钱的学生,自己骑车上下课,零开销还可以保护环环境。

四、采购费

不出意外的话，基本上每周都是要去超市进行生活物资的采购的,每次购物的目标可能会不一样,零食、日用品都是比较常见的,这样每个月的预算大概就在50-100欧之间。

西班牙留学安全常识

1.勿随身带大额现金银行卡

中国人有随身携带现金的习惯，而在国外则主要使用各种卡消费。如果出门少带现金，宿舍中也不多放现金，就能够有效减少财产损失。刚抵达的学生应立即把现金存入银行账户。以前曾有学生的书包和钱包在学校、餐馆里以及火车上等地方被盗。如果你的钱包里的钱不多，这不算大的损失。通常情况下钱包里放一百元就够用了。

尽量不携带银行卡或信用卡。因为一旦遗失，通过用你的银行卡或信用卡，别人可以轻易得到你的大笔钱款。如果钱包被盗或被威胁提供密码，需立即通知银行。

2.学校宿舍胜过在外租房

In capacity as Professor of Mathematics at Fudan University I'm writing to recommend Mr. Wang Gesintosyour PhD program in Computer Science. I have known Mr. Wang since his sophomore year of college and have acted as his thesis advisor and mentor. In my experience he is a gifted and diligent student and an admirably hard worker.

Wang is an impressive student because he has been forced to overcome the significant challenge of a serious illness during his freshman year. When I first met Wang in my Discrete Math class he did not appear to be anything special to me. While his exam scores were good they were not as high as I would now expect of him. What I didn't know then was that due to his illness Wang was attempting to take all of the difficult early mathematics courses at one time including Discrete Mathematics Advanced Mathematics Linear Algebra and Possibilities. While most students found preparing for just one set of these exams difficult Wang was overwhelmed by four of them. But in the end he achieved an impressive score on the final exam which made me conscious of his unusual determination he demonstrates when confronting difficult challenges.

Mr. Wang and I have often talked about a variety of mathematics and computer science concepts and problems. During these discussions I always found him to be delightfully intelligent. Not only does he quickly understand the concepts and problems presented to him he is able to analyze these problems and present solutions. But perhaps most important is that Wang's thinking is intensely rigorous. When looking at any question he carefully scrutinizes it and if he finds any uncertain issues he clears them up immediately. I believe this kind of thought is essential to become an excellent computer programmer.

Serving as his thesis advisor I had a first-hand opportunity to observe the way in which Wang's mind works. In his senor thesis Mr. Wang mainly discussed two challenging questions in regards to″ANN″. In our books in China knowledge of ANN and its uses are very rare. Few people in China have studied this topic and consequently the materials that are available on ANN are limited. Working on this difficult project not only did Mr. Wang rise to the challenge but he went above and beyond the call of duty to analyze his secondary sources and test them for accuracy in practice. In this way he found mistakes in the book that we use. His diligence and hard work made me extremely proud of him.

Mr. Wang is an intelligent motivated and industrious individual. Teaching and advising him has been a delightful pleasure. I know that if given the chance to study abroad in America he will arm himself to become a great programmer he dreams of being. 西班牙留学申请材料清单

西班牙留学材料大致包括：留学签证、担保金及流水账证明、西班牙大学录取通知书、西班牙语言学院录取通知等。这些准备是个重要的环境，这其中每一步都要严格去做，而且会被逐一审核。有的学生因为其中某个步骤出现问题耽搁了，就很容易造成所申请的大学已经开学而要多等半年甚至一年时间。下面就简单介绍一些最基本的材料内容以及它们的准备说明。

(1)填好签证申请表并将4张近期照片贴在上面;

这个目前北京使馆不是非常在意，就是一个申请人信息汇总而已。不过建议大家规范书写表格，以便省去签证官输机时间。

(2)护照;

记得复印所有页(包括空白页)，并在最后一页签字即可。

(3)翻译并认证过的无犯罪公正书的原件及复印件;

无犯罪公证书去户口处(有的是要求去街道/学校保卫科)让他们开了证明，然后拿到户口所在的派出所盖章就好了(派出所盖章就比较麻烦因人而议，建议申请人早去以免耽误时间，毕竟双认证的时间很久)。带着这些去公证处即可。关于翻译，请不要自行翻译，公证处是不承认私人翻译的。最后都是由公证处翻译并盖章。

关于双认证，这个就较麻烦，申请人在哪里办理都一样(长虹桥认证处、泛利大厦、国旅等等)，他们是没权干涉使馆认证的，最多就是催催教育部，其中长虹桥认证处相对便宜还快些，主要是人家都是教育部退下来的一些老同志，单从个人素质上将就比其他纯商业性质的公司员工好，服务态度就是一个“和善”。

(4)体检证明

使馆领事处指定医疗机构所开的健康证明原件，申请人不得患有对社会秩序造成危害的传染病、精神病，且无毒瘾(原件);这个体检建议大家去使馆附近的国际SOS移民、留学服务体检服务中心(沃尔沃公司大厦后边)或者和睦家(建国门地铁站出口附近)，两家各有所长都不需要公证，第一家提供食物、人相对少;第二家报销20元以内的打车费，人相对多些并且在地下室卫生条件一般。

(5)由申请人已被录取的私立或公立学校负责人签发的录取通知;

尽量选择正规大学，使馆不在意是否是公立大学，但是比较留意一般性质的语言中心，即不提供后继学术研究的培训中心。这里涉及到语言培训结束后的录取通知书申请、签证的转换等等琐碎小问题，签证处比较在意这些可能产生遗留问题的签证申请，除非你有强有力原因解释给他听(前提是签证官面签时给你机会说并愿意听你说)。相对一般大学下设的语言中心申请入境许可要审核严些并且遭到二次面试的通知要大些。

(6)申请人学位证书翻译件的公证证书;

不要轻信网络上流传的“自我翻译说”，公证处是不认可一般翻译公司的翻译件的(即使公证处也翻译不了)。而且在翻译时，针对本科以下毕业证书翻译尤为重要，一旦用词不准。很有可能成为拒签的主要原因之一。我中心在长期受理北京领。

(7)资金担保及流水账

申请人需证明自己拥有充足的生活来源(包括食宿及日用开销)的证明。通常为定期存款15至20万元，建议最低不要低于15万元，存期为6个月或以上，同时开据父母收入证明，让父母的单位开张证明，然后盖章就可以了，不需要公证，但是要找正规翻译公司翻译，千万不要自己翻译或者找资质不好的翻译中心。

最麻烦的就是流水账了，北京领区是6个月，上海领区是12个月较累人，就是多存点，然后再取，如此循环，但是别太有规律了就好了。当然还要配合个人情况，不是简单的按照每个月存一万即可。

(8)500课时西班牙语水平;

500课时西班牙语水平，对于西班牙留学签证来说，算的上是重中之重的环节了，因为语言水平将直接影响到你的签证结果(建议参加真对性课程：千奕500课时精品出国班)，所以选择一家专业的西班牙语学校是非常必要的，特别是一些高中毕业生本来英语就不好的同学，在国内西语基础一旦打的不好，就算过了签证这关，到西班牙参加语言课程时同样也会感到吃力，倒不如在国内尽量多学一些，事半功倍。

(9)西班牙住宿证明;
