Dear xxx,

Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its globalposition. As a senior at Beijing University majoring in Economics, I feel thatmy field is fundamental to the progress of my country. Yet, at the same time, Irealize only too well that what I have learned as an undergraduate is far fromenough. Therefore, it is my desire to pursue a graduate degree I Economics atyour university. If accepted, my intended concentration would be EconomicDevelopment and Public Economics.

In the process of preparing myself for advanced research, I obtained asolid academic background in mathematics, computer science and basic economictheory. In order to enhance my capabilities and further establish my background,I plan to take Probability and Econometrics as my electives during my lastsemester at Beijing University. During my undergraduate career I was fortunateto be able to audit several advanced graduate level courses taught by overseasprofessors such as Comparative Economic Systems and Advanced Macroeconomics. These classes not only introduced me to new economic concepts and theories, butalso broadened my perspective and gave me new insights into the depth of myfield.

After over three years of studying economics and extensive reading inrelated fields, I have developed my own understanding of the present Chineseeconomy with system. I feel, and it is an idea shared by many, that the Chinesegovernment is presently struggling to adapt a policy which would peacefullyintegrate the advantages of a marked economy with the current Socialist system.to a certain extent, I feel that the government has been successful inimplementing this aim. However, many problems have yet to be resolved. Chiefamong these is the problem of rejuvenating and restructuring the large,state-owned enterprises. As a result under the Chinese socialist system, thesecompanies not only lack a spirit of competition, but are also hopelesslyoverstaffed. There is a definite need to cut back on workers, many of whom areunskilled and present an unnecessary burden on these companies.

The fundamental problem here is that China lacks unemployment and socialsecurity programs, which would be able to assist and re-train these workersshould they be laid off. As there are no options for them, the companies areforced to retain these laborers, creating a stagnant state which limits bothproduction levels and net profits. While foreign-imported goods and foreigncompanies were scare in China, this was not a major problem. However, the influxof foreign goods and corporations has forced China into a predicament where itcan no longer afford to maintain useless employees for the benefit of the State.Should the situation here continue unchecked, China risks loosing its domesticmarked to foreign companies.

These ideas were the result of my field research conducted during my junioryear. During that time, I studied first-hand edly China’s system of publiceconomics and found it lacking in many ways. I feel that if China is ever to bea serious competitor in the world market it needs first to develop a moreprogressive system of public policies. For this, China will have to look toother systems, which have struggled and successfully handled this same problem. My goal is to continue my education in the United States where I can not onlywitness the dynamics of an economic system different from ours, but also studythe ways in which America’s public policy could be adapted and utilized byChina.

In terms of global economics, China still has much to learn. The governmentis far from reconciling itself with many of the principles that underlie themodern market. I also feel that the Chinese situation is unique, and , that inorder to be successful, policy makers must take into consideration regionalcharacteristics, historical tradition and social psychology when defining thecourse of the future. However, it is also essential that the future generationsof leaders, administrators and teachers learn from other countries in order tobetter understand the complexity of China’s role within the global economicsituation.

The more China’s economy is prosperous, the more it needs its owneconomists. Therefore, at the end of my graduate study, I intend to return to mycountry and contribute to China’s economic progress. My ultimate goal is toteach introducing advanced Western research methods to my country and, ifpossible, tackle some of the economic problems faced by my country.

I am also applying for overseas graduate study because of the fact that theUnited States holds the leading position in the research of my chosen field.Your institution, known for its careful and exacting work ethic and nurturingacademic atmosphere, is the university I have long admired. I am confident thatwith your distinguished faculty and recognized facilities, my potential willdevelop into knowledge and experience beneficial to both the United States andChina.

Dear _,

Hehe...this is the latest version, edited last night with help of a critical friend! Much better :)

In everyday life, people take for granted that some people are good at things and some people are not. But I have always believed that human beings are capable of far more than they realise. It is this interest in human potential that motivates me to want to work as an Educational Psychologist.

I have always had an interest in the human mind, but never considered working in this field. However, personal experience of ADHD and autism led me to volunteer at an autistic unit in a local primary school, which I have now been at for almost two years. Whilst there, I realised that my interest in the Autistic Spectrum and ADHD was more than a passing curiosity. My experience at the school provided me with a deeper understanding of these conditions, and, combined with my interests in educational psychology and technologies such as entrainment and biofeedback, led me to consider the potential application of these to assist such children in reaching their full potential. One day I returned home with a sense of exhiliration, and realised that helping autistic children was something that I wanted to pursue as a professional psychologist.

I have also worked voluntarily as a teaching assistant at a local college. My duties included creating certificates, writing course manuals, and supervised teaching. In addition, I was comissioned by the charity DYCF to teach relaxation techniques to “difficult teens” as part of a remedial programme, and wrote a report of recommendation. This demonstrates that I am able to empathise and interact with a variety of people in a range of educational settings, as well as cope with a high workload.

I spent some time researching careers in psychology and it was quite clear that Educational Psychology was the route for me. Although I had studied Counselling Skills in --- and DD100: Introduction to the Social Sciences previously with the Open University, it was of course a case of preparing myself for Higher Education. So in I enrolled on DSE212: Exploring Psychology, with the Open University. My overall assesment score on DD100 had been 81, but of course it has been a while since my last formal academic study. Hence I was pleased to receive my first essay back from the Open University ----, scored at 83, giving much promise for my future studies.

At the same time, however, I have worked hard to overcome my difficulty with mathematics. So I enrolled on GCSE Mathematics: Foundation. I recently used accelerated learning protocols such as mnemonics and entrainment to learn my timestables in just under two weeks, and have also enrolled on a second course for extra help. Because of this, I am now confident of achieving a grade C in Mathematics, and believe that this demonstrates my committed and creative approach to learning, as well as my practical application of psychological research.

I read psychological articles and reports in New Scientist, Scientific American, and Psychology Today. I also keep up to date by researching psychology online, and have a particular interest in the research of the HeartMath and Monroe Institutes, and the application of their research and technology within education and therapy. My latest read has been Human Givens: a new approach to emotional health and clear thinking, by Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell .

Having a keen analytical mind as well as a deep empathy for working with children, I look forward to continuing my study of Psychology. My ultimate aim is to apply psychological techniques to help the autistic and ADHD populations achieve their full potential, and hopefully add to and expand the current theoretical understanding of these conditions.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

My interest in science dates back to my early childhood. I have always excelled in physical sciences and have received numerous awards in mathematics in high school. At age 16, I attended National Taiwan University (NTU), majoring physics. Four years of extensive study in physics and current work in surface science inspired me to undertake a greater challenge in pursuing a doctorate degree in physics. My aspiration to be a research scientist also makes graduate study an absolute necessity. As an undergraduate student, I specialized in physics, mathematics, and computer science. In my junior year I studied computational physics in Applied Mathematics III, during which I developed a 2- dimensional Ising model with the finite size effect as a course project. In addition to being elated by my computer simulated phase transition phenomena, I was also pleased with the computed values of the critical exponents which closely agreed with theoretical values.

During the two-year course on the fundamentals of experimental physics, I diligently studied the techniques of operating experimental equipment, such as the epitaxy systems, lithography, and computer controlled data acquisition interfaces. I enjoyed these hand-on experiences immensely. My current duty, as a research assistant, is to set up diamond film growth kinetics experiments which is designed to verify whether the mechanism of H atoms destroying C-H bonds in diamond film growth is the bottle-neck reaction to diamond film formation. The results will give valuable insights and better enhance the research efforts of another group here at IAMS. In the mean time, I am learning about the scanning probe microscopy, charged particle optics, energy analyzers and many instruments used in surface science through the seminars held in my group. In order to be knowledgeable in the breadth of physics, I attended workshops and symposiums in different fields. In the symposium on Symmetries in Subatomic Physics, I worked as an interpreter and edited the article “Conceptual Beginnings of Various Symmetries in the Twentieth Century Physics” from Prof. C. N. Frank Yang's speech and translated it into Chinese.

Keeping an open mind to get experiences not only in academics, I actively participated in extracurricular activities while attending NTU. In senior, I was a part-time teaching assistant grading exams and answering questions in the courses, A Journey to Subatomic World and From Quarks to Black Holes. I also have a part-time position as the bulletin board system administrator for the Physical Society of ROC. I am currently construct their WWW homepage of IAMS (www.sinica.edu.tw/as/intro/atom.htm) to improve information exchange and science education in Taiwan.

Accumulating these valuable experiences, I am preparing myself for a career in scientific research. Being exposed to surface science, I am interested in mesoscopic systems and nanostructure materials. I plan to concentrate on condensed matter physics. Having carefully read the content of the graduate studies and on- going research programs at University of Washington at Seattle, I believe that UW is the best place for me to be. I am confident that my diverse research experiences together with a firm commitment to physics have merited me to be qualified to undertake graduate study at University of Washington at Seattle.

Dear _,

In “Das Vorleser” by Bernard Schlink, the main character asserts that decisions can have no influence on our behaviour. In many ways I think this is true. There are times when we can consciously make a decision, justify it, yet we can't go through with it. I am curious as to why this is, as I have always been fascinated by behaviour. A-Level Psychology has provided me with some answers, yet I am eager to learn more.

Cognitive Psychology is one of my main interests because I believe that the best way to understand people's behaviour is to try to understand the processes that take place in decision making, in remembering and also at times when we don't even realise them, such as during the perception of our surrounding environment. I also like it because of its links to neurosciences, which I have found intriguing because of the links between brain and behaviour. Recently, I have been reading articles on mirror neurons in Scientific American Mind, which I found compelling because it would appear to explain many of the processes engaged in learning. I found Kandel's work with sea slugs fascinating as well because it would seem to explain memory at a biological level, but I feel that there is still much to discover, as I think that all behaviour could be explained in biological terms. I think this should be investigated using the experimental method, with the challenge in doing so making it all the more exciting.

I am also very interested in mental disorders. What compel me are the relationships between various biological and environmental factors which can induce them. Richard P. Bentall's 'Madness Explained' gave me an insight into these relationships, but I also found this book interesting because of the implications for clinical psychology. His theory for treating psychological symptoms rather than whole disorders could be more beneficial for patients due to the lack of reliability in the traditional method of diagnosis and treatment. Despite this, I am sceptical whether this approach would actually eliminate the problem, however he would assert that it does.

I consider myself an excellent candidate to study Psychology as I have a strong work ethic, I am motivated to extend my learning beyond the classroom with reading around the subject and attend lectures organised by the Royal Institute in London when I can (the most recent of which discussing infidelity from a psychological viewpoint) and I am very capable of keeping to deadlines in spite of my many extra curricular activities. I am also a responsible and reliable person as these are some of the qualities required for being a Prefect.

One of these extra curricular activities is Student Researchers. Currently, I am the Head of Qualitative Research and we have to design qualitative questionnaires, distribute them and analyse them. At times this can be quite challenging, especially our first project, which was undertaken during our AS exams. So far we have completed two projects, one exploring the students' views on learning and another investigating the students' views on grades and feedback. I gained excellent experience with researching, analysing and evaluating evidence, drawing conclusions and exploring the implications of these conclusions, which I feel will particularly help me in studying Psychology.

Outside of school, I referee for youth and senior football. This is challenging because of the unpredictability and aggressiveness of some players, whom I must keep control of, often under intense pressure, yet I also find it rejuvenating as it is a break from studying. Since March, I have been in the refereeing promotion scheme, which pushes my ability as a referee and also enhances my organisational skills. I also enjoy playing bass guitar or socialising with friends.

I am eager to study Psychology and the prospect excites me greatly. I strongly believe I am an excellent candidate and I hope that I will be offered a place at your university.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

In China as in the _, one can easily give up the career of a language teacher to become a lawyer or a businessman. I, however, gave up a promising legal and business career to become a language teacher, but I have never regretted it. In fact, the more I teach, the more committed I am to teaching. But not just teaching. Having battled with China’s traditional mode of teaching for several years, I now would like to help improve teaching in China by introducing new and more effective instructional technology and media into the country. For that, I would like to pursue an advanced degree in education in your country.

Now an English teacher at the training center of the China National Container Corporation, I graduated in 1995 from the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing, where I majored in business law. At this highly respected higher-learning institution, I received broad training that was both rigorous and vigorous. After four years of undergraduate studies, the strong logic inherent in law translated into strong logic in my thinking. With the knowledge and skills I attained in the law program, I boast the kind of intellectual maturity that would help me whatever I do. But law was never my first choice for a profession.

Starting from my high school days, I always dreamed of becoming a teacher. In the second year of high school, we once had to write an essay on the topic “what do you want to do when you grow up”. I proudly wrote, “I want to be a teacher!” But my parents shattered my dream by insisting that I pursue another profession. My father, an engineer with a Ph. D. degree, and my mother, a university teacher of English, had their reasons. Chinese teachers, particularly those teaching at the primary and secondary levels, are poorly paid and begrudgingly respected. Being young and inexperienced in the world, I acceded to their wishes when I was choosing my major for the university.

But my passion for teaching was not to be stifled forever. Giver any opportunity, it would burst out. Upon graduation with an LL. B. Degree, I first took up the position of a supervisor with the China National Container Corporation in charge of its Overseas Sales Department. As the job entailed frequent translation and interpretation between Chinese and English, I persisted in improving my English proficiency by attending various training courses and learning it on my own. My command of the foreign tongue became so good that, after about one year, I began to teach it to my colleagues on a full-time basis at the company’s training center. After a huge detour, my career finally got back on track.

What makes teaching so enjoyable to me is that it is a learning experience. I enjoy it the most when my students ask difficult questions, particularly questions that I have to think long and hard to answer. I also enjoy posing questions to students, but my questions are never intended to intimidate the students or even test their knowledge but rather designed to stimulate their minds. In the constant exchange of questions and answers, students and teachers improve themselves alike to the credit of the old Chinese saying: To teach is to learn. In my three years of teaching, I really have learned a great deal.

One of the things I have learned is the ability to not only deal with but also strike an accord with people of different backgrounds. My students at the training center are all adults accomplished in a variety of roles and professions. In most cases, they are older than I am. While I stand as their equals, I have served as their mentors and role models the same way as most teachers do their students. By so doing, I have won their trust and confidence in what I teach, which has helped to make my teaching powerful and effective.

To take full advantage of my teaching skills, I started in October to teach English and other subjects at the primary school I attended when I was a child. As the children I teach are at the age when I studied here, I am particularly sensitive to their needs and appreciative of their potential. Together with other teachers, I designed various training programs in calligraphy, art, writing, mental calculation, and English, programs that combine learning with entertainment. The kids n my class are now learning more and faster thanks to the fun they find everyday in my programs.

Entertainment is, however, by no means just a ploy I use to sweeten the bitter pill of learning for the children, but rather has its own intrinsic value. While kids can hardly learn well without being able to have fun, the lack of fun hurts more than the kids’ ability to learn. It can impair the kids’ emotional and psychological health to an extent that no amount of knowledge and skills drab teaching force-feeds into them can make up. Entertainment is therefore part and parcel of what we teachers have to provide to children if we are to help them grow up into productive members of the society. The way I see entertainment, it should be considered an end in education.

As China’s education is oriented overwhelmingly towards helping kids pass exams, entertainment is about the least on the mind of an average teacher or principal. In the rush to produce super kids as measured by the grades out of exams, the purpose of education is lost all too often. The curriculum is limited to subjects covered by mandatory exams. Students are seldom encouraged to come up with original ideas. Interaction between teachers and students is kept at a minimum in the classroom. The teachers compete to heap homework on the students, as do the parents. While everybody is tired to death, few kids get armed with the ability to take initiatives or solve real-world problems. It is high time that fresh approaches were brought in.

One of the ways to make a change to the Chinese classroom is to utilize new technologies and media of teaching. School authorities in China, as those elsewhere, increasingly realize the importance of computerization, and many of the better-off schools in China are already stacked with state-of-the-art computers. But reports say only a tiny fraction of those computers are adequately utilized. The situation with other educational technologies and media is no better. They are either absent from the school sitting or vastly under-used. Few Chinese teachers have acquired the know-how or the drive to make use of these modern facilities.

I therefore would like to pursue first a master’s degree and then a Ph. D. degree in instructional technology and media in the United States, where the use of modern educational facilities is undoubtedly the most advanced in the world. Judging by the information I have culled from your, website I think your institution is an American leader in the research and studies of this field. I am anxious to study under the seasoned guidance of your distinguished faculty. I hope that, after I complete my advanced training in your program, I can be a much more effective teacher in China, one that sets an example for all other Chinese teachers.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

There is a rapid growth in global organisational concepts, crystallised in Japanese business philosophy, to be as effective as possible in the most efficient way. New technology involving networking information and automation influences the behaviour of business and enables significant transformation. This need to maximise efficiency and effectiveness in such a competitive age is increasingly crucial to the success of a business. This is why it is an exciting and fascinating period in both the commercial and economic world to study Business Management.

Adaptability, creative thinking and the application of technology are now intrinsic to managing businesses. I have developed these principles and enjoyed the spectrum of sixth form study that has taught me to approach problems from different political, economical and psychological perspectives. Throughout Business Studies, to complement what has been taught I have researched real-life business solutions and how they have been implemented, such as the responsive marketing used by Coca Cola to prolong their business cycle and sustain major profitability. Studying ICT has enabled me to examine the criticality of technology in giving businesses a competitive edge by considering issues such as organisational objectives, people and legal implications rather than making decisions based solely on financial factors. Furthermore, studying Psychology gives me insight into the human influences on organisational behaviour through studying motivational theories such as the hierarchy of needs model proposed by Maslow, whilst the coursework has developed my skills in collecting and analysing data in order to establish trends and draw conclusions. Studying English Language has allowed me to develop an ability to express my ideas clearly and concisely.

I have worked for _ as a Tester, assisting in the development of _, the fastest-selling PC game ever. It was a significant learning experience and made me evaluate myself and better understand my strengths and skills, such as the ability to easily identify discrepancies and communicate these effectively to management so that problems can be solved. Recent experience at _ Ltd gave me a taste of working within a larger organisation. Operating within two different, but equally successful organisations has enabled me to see contrasting leadership styles and corporate culture. Within college, I participated in a paired reading project where I listened to and assessed readers lower down the school which required a relaxed, patient and friendly approach with the younger students, as well as punctuality and dedication. Throughout the past year, I have represented the college in district basketball and rugby competitions.

I am a committed member of the Colts team at my local rugby side. I have captained the team in previous seasons which required leadership, confidence and diligence. In my spare time, I enjoy listening to a range of music, going to the gym and socialising. I am a regular reader of the Financial Times, enjoy keeping up with current affairs and business news. I enjoy reading a variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction such as 'Making It Happen' (J. Harvey-Jones) where his common sense approach complements the management theories of more staid texts. This degree will equip me for my career in the unpredictable and fast moving world of commerce.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

The purpose behind this personal statement is to not only gain admission to your well-established and highly respected Ph.D. program, but to impress upon you my passion for learning and my tremendous desire to succeed in both scholastic research and in teaching on the professional level. I have based my decision to pursue an academic career not on purely practical reasons, but rather on my own natural interests and aptitude. My personal philosophy is that money and social status should not be pursued as life-consuming objectives and that in actuality they are the by-products of goals originating from one's inner needs. I understand that my intellectual capacity is a gift, and I intend to use this gift to the very best of my substantial capabilities.

I am interested in the field of study of Organizational Behavior. In the past, I have had the experience of working in settings where the people and the corporate cultures of the companies were all different. I have found that there is a great difference in the both the behaviors of people and of their organizations, depending on whether they are state-owned enterprises (SOEs), large multinational firms, or small to medium sized foreign enterprises. One simple example is that of the ability of an employee to act independently without direct instructions from his or her boss. In many Chinese organizations, acting without direct instructions is considered a form of disrespect towards the supervisor, who is generally offended by such behavior. In my experience and research, such organizations tend to have low operating efficiency with the employees losing their innate ability to take the initiative.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Sir or Madam,

There are there reasons leading to me choose business, the most important reason is that I am very interested in business. In my opinion, handling good business is the same as successful work of art. That’s an exciting thing. The second reason is that I have already learnt it for three years, so I want to broaden my knowledge about business which will benefit my future life. The third reason is that I want to become a successful business lady which is my dream all the time.

To be honesty, I am an average student but I have diligent and strong confident heart. I believe that a good attitude can change bad situation. So I am always keeping a positive attitude on my life. I never ever give up any chance of promoting my study. During my three years in Hubei Normal University,I never fail a class and always do my best for assignment. However,in my mind, social activity is as the same important as class study. In my spare time, I took part in student union and took charge of minister in arts department. Our well-organized activities attracted many students to practice themselves. Last summer, I joined the Work and Travel Programme to be a staff in an American company for three months. I made good use of that chance to improve my oral English and tasted western culture. I think I can understand and adapt to a foreign culture in a short period.

I firmly believe that anyone could acquire success by their right way and fighting. This is one of the reasons why I want to go abroad. What’s more, I want to taste and accept some western education. I hope that I can learn more differences between Chinese and British university education and widen my horizon. Furthermore,as we know, UK is a very modern country. It owns the most advanced education system and top universities in the world. And graceful school environments deeply attract me. By the way, if I can learn in your university I would cherish and appreciate this chance. In the future, I also mean to apply Master’s Degree in UK. But after that, I will go back to my country and look for a job related to business.

I really want to own a colorful campus life in your school, further develop my overall capabilities including organizational ability, teamwork spirit etc. I believe I can adapt to a foreign life and acquire best degree. With all the above mentioned, in terms of my understanding of business and my enthusiasm for it, I hope that I can be up to the standard of the admission requirements in your university. I believe that my strong interest in this subject. last, my positive attitude and comprehensive ability will facilitate my successful completion of the proposed program. Thank you for your time!

Sincerely yours, Wanbin Xu

(Applicationforms)

(Resume)

6、TOEFL、GRE(GMAT)

1、TOEFL(TestofEnglishasaForeignLanguage)

2、GRE(GraduateRecordExam)

3、GMAT(GraduateManagementAdmissionTest)

4、LSAT(LawSchoolAdmissionTest)

5、TSE(TestofSpokenEnglish)1、填写申请表,缴纳报名费/近期学习成绩(GPA成绩)等

2、TOEFL/SSAT/SLEP

Dear _,

An experienced electronic engineer trained in China's major cradle of technological talents, I am submitting this document in support of my application for acceptance into your graduate program. With more than eight years of higher learning and quality research behind me, I now stand ready to pursue advanced studies and scale grander heights in my career.

Presently, I work at a leading Beijing-based center of telecommunications research and development, jointly run by Canada's Northern Telecom Ltd., one of the world's foremost IT enterprises, and the Beijing University of Yanjiu, a major higher-learning institution in IT technologies in China. Engaged in cutting-edge research and development at this center, I have accumulated a lot of advanced knowledge and expertise in IT technologies in a relatively short time.

I obtained this coveted position at such a respected international establishment on the strength of my research experience at the North China Institute of Computing Technologies, the country's oldest research organization in computer science. Exercising my diligence and creativity, I specialized in automation research and development in this institute, which not only gave me the opportunity to make full use of what I had learned at the university but also spurred me to constantly improve myself. I taught myself Computer Control Technology, Contemporary Control Theory, Electrical control Technology and Process Control & Automation Device, among other subjects.

Because of my strong skills in both hardware and software, I was appointed in 1995 the leader of a team to design the computer control system “Distributed Control System (DCS)”. Under my effective leadership, the team completed design of the system structure, development of the modules, and programming of the software, and system debugging all in less than one year. A real-time computer control system, it can be combined with 2048 channels. For this project, I independently designed the kernels-CPU module, two other modules and the I/O interface software. The system is now a leading product in China's automation industry.

My research successes were built upon my solid undergraduate training at Tsinghua University, widely considered China's best engineering school. Between 1989 and 1994, I studied at Tsinghua as a major of electronic engineering, concentrating on basic courses as well as courses of my major. These courses solidly grounded me in theories of telecommunications and endowed me with all-round expertise in both software and hardware engineering. At the time of my graduation, my overall GPA ranked me among the top 10% of about 200 students in my grade.

Taking advantage of Tsinghua's emphasis on hands-on experience, I did a lot of lab work in my undergraduate studies. In my third year, I joined the university's Laboratory of Information Systems. In the lab I successfully designed the “2Mb/s PCM Digital Interface (32 frames)” used in the analogue PBX (Private Branch Exchange). In 1993, I independently designed a “Speech Signal Processing Card” used in the SUN SPARC station. This successful development of this card ended the situation in which the SUN SPARC station could not be used for speech processing and other multimedia applications. In the course of these projects, I became versed in hardware structure of the RISC computer, UNIX operating system and programming. All this laid a firm foundation for my career advancement.

My academic standing was so strong that I was offered acceptance into Tsinghua's graduate school without the normally mandatory admission exams. That was a privilege available to only the very best of each crop of graduating students. But I declined the offer, figuring that I should gain challenging research experience behind me, I think the time has come for me to not only undertake graduate studies but also undertake graduate studies in a quality program in the United States.

Ideally, I would like to enter into a Master's program that would lead me into Ph. D. studies later on. In such a program, I would like to focus my studies on one or a combination of the following areas: Control Systems, Communications Engineering, Digital Signal and Image Processing, or Microcomputer Applications. I will bring to the program a professional background significantly enrich my knowledge, enhance my expertise, and sharpen my research skills. If you accept me, you should find, some years down the road, that I will be a leading scientist in China's efforts to develop its IT industries.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Everything we do involves psychology; the natural techniques we use to develop our strengths and ways we learn to surpass our weaknesses has been an interest of mine since high school, By watching others gaining their characteristics and personal skills I have been gravitated towards psychology ever since.

I have come to the realisation that the ability of the mind is immense. During the first couple of years of high school I was somewhat reserved and barely spoke out in class. However by observing the confidence of my friends and class mates I feel that I have sub-consciously applied their methods and learnt to be more confident over time. That is why I believe that the society in which we grow in has an impact on our mind and the mind we develop impacts our society.

The notion that I have been able to recognise how I got my personality shows that I have excellent observational skills and this skill is highly useful if not mandatory in the field of psychology.

As a student I will bring with me great enthusiasm, a need to learn and develop skills from the university lectures and I will also bring great passion and curiosity towards psychology I have not studied Psychology through the educational system before however whilst attending my National Certificate in Business I have been given the opportunity to learn about psychology by studying various marketing and advertising methods that use the mindset to convey messages to attract potential customers, For example, the use of catchy slogans, such as the famous McDonalds slogan “Im lovin it”.

In the first year of my business course I studied a unit titled 'career development' in which I conducted a year long research study into my career. This involved studying my career ambition in depth and since then I have known my career ambition is in psychology.

The business units that I have covered so far have helped me develop skills which can help me prepare for university life. At my college, a significant amount of learning is delivered via lectures, however many of the modules studied require me to conduct research, develop independent study skills and use my own initiative. I strongly believe that the diverse methods of learning that I have developed will help me succeed at a higher level.

My mother is a carer in a nursing home. Her dedication to her work and the positive impact her work has had on the people being helped inspired me to develop the passion for helping others.

This inspiration enhanced my interest in psychology and led me to conduct independent reading into clinical psychology so that I may understand how patients cope with psychological distress. I believe higher education will give me an excellent opportunity to study psychology in greater depth.

A lot of my family have studied at university level and since childhood I have been taught to appreciate the great importance of education and the positive impact it has on an individual's life. My father and sister have attended university and my Father always speaks about the change it made to his life. This understanding has motivated me to apply for higher education and develop my career in the field of psychology.

Dear _,

I find a constant source of pleasure in conceptualising unfamiliar ideas as well as thinking logically and analytically to arrive at satisfying and often beautiful proofs. I am fascinated by the ubiquity of maths and the way that it underpins everything around us. I encountered binary maths at the age of five and since then have found numbers and logic bewitching.

I have had many opportunities to apply my maths skills over the years. In year 7, I obtained a gold award in the UK Mathematical Challenge which gained me a place on a series of mathematics master-classes. These classes covered topics ranging from relativity to John Conway’s Perpetual Calendar and showed me a more mature mathematical way of thinking. Reading books such as ‘Fermat’s Last Theorem’ and attending various maths and science lectures also fuelled and deepened my interest. I regularly attend a maths club in Cardiff University, tackling problems independently then discussing solutions with other keen mathematicians. I completed a national engineering scheme where our team undertook a project to save water. We did extensive research to develop solutions for the company’s challenge then produced a report on our findings and delivered an extended presentation to a panel. For the project to succeed we had to apply a wide range of skills for example ICT, problem solving, communication and application of number. I have enjoyed learning more about the way the world works through chemistry and physics lessons while the many unfamiliar and abstract ideas in maths have been fascinating. I thrive on independent study, yet enjoy collaboration. My tutoring of students for their GCSE maths was a fascinating experience which also helped me analyse and develop my own studies and mathematical skills. Over the last six months I have volunteered for over 100 hours in an after-school, play-care facility. I also run a book club and a contemporary dance club at my school where I have learned how to prepare suitable yet challenging work for the students then apply my preparation into practice. I subscribe to National Geographic and read the New Scientist regularly.

I am ‘full of life’, confident and at ease in new situations. I enjoy the unknown. I am determined and committed to everything I decide to do and like to arrive at my own conclusions through discussion and debate. Dance is a passion for me as a creative and practical activity. I do over 7 hours a week of ballet and contemporary dance training which has given me a high-level technique and skill base with a growing sense of artistry. I am a member of the national dance company of Wales’ associates’ scheme and am studying advanced grades in ballet. I travel widely, recently visiting places such as India, Morocco and Vietnam – all of which have increased my sense of independence and search for new experiences. I represent my County in cross-country races, which offers me physical and mental challenges which I face with eager enthusiasm.

The increased pace of Further Maths has suited me and I have succeeded in gaining 100% in four of my maths and physics modules in year 12. The far-reaching applicability and connections between different fields in mathematics gives me a thirst for knowledge across a broad spectrum of pure and applied mathematics. By tackling and discussing challenging maths problems and extending my knowledge in a variety of ways, I have found my passion for maths increasing greatly this year. I want this to continue in my university life through the intensity of the maths course and I want to gain a depth of knowledge in mathematics. I know this will lead me along fascinating avenues and I look forward to finding out about new and exciting areas of mathematics as I make the transition from school to university.

Yours sincerely,

Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its globalposition. Though more and more companies built, management of companies cannotcatch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning fieldin China,so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management inEngland. The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to mychildhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modernentrepreneurs. As a young girl,it was inspirational hearing about his businessventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. Mymother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simplecalculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I,also, would somedaybe able to enter the realm of business.

With the time of growing up,I preferred reading books to satisfy mycuriosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered.Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and myknowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasingrapidly.

As a high school student in China,I had to concentrate on the CollegeEntrance Examination (CEE),even so,books not related to the exams were neverexcluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June,20xx,Iwas so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in thedepartment of Computer Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional ChineseMedicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be afailure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms,I realizedthat I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At thatmoment,I lost my direction and objectives.

My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter offact,I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some booksabout management by Peter F.Drucker. I began to notice something interesting:Why some companies can produce more than others? Why some company can sell morethan others? Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing thesame difficulties?

With the questions in my mind,I started to read many relevant books. I waslucky to read the book “Jack:Straight from the Gut”by Jack Welch,in Which JohnA. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for acompany. When I was a junior,I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. Ishould manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shopeven made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the runthe shop. From this,my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business hasbeen greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I wasdoing. By December,20xx,I had finally determined to take business managementas my career instead of IT. To accumulate more relevant knowledge,I strived togain more practical work experience in some big companies.

Fortunately,as a senior,I began by conducting an internship in theArchitecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months,I worked as anassistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the differentdepartments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadenedmy perspective of management conditions and business performance in differentindustries. The experience showed me that management is much more important thanthat of I thought in big companies. After graduation,I continued my work inthis company. In May,20xx,the company offered me an opportunity to participatein an training program held by a famous management school. Through in-depthdiscussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me topursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual abilityand the brand new ideas I mentioned.

During the short period of training,I realized that pursuing a higherdegree in management is a wise choice for me now. Lancaster, with its excellencein management, represents the perfect fit for my needs. In your challengingenvironment,I can build the required foundation of knowledge related tomanagement to achieve my goals. I am firmly convinced that your admission willbe my first step of success. With this in mind,I hereby submit my application, and await your favorable reply.
