In 1963 a Lancaster bomber crashed on Wallis Island, a remote place in the South Pacific, a long way west of Samoa. The plane wasn't too badly damaged, but over the years, the crash was forgotten and the wreck remained undisturbed. Then in 1989, twenty-six years after the crash, the plane was accidentally rediscovered in an aerial survey of the island. By this time, a Lancaster bomber in reasonable condition was rare and worth rescuing. The French authorities had the plane packaged and moved in parts back to France. Now a group of enthusiasts are going to have the plane restored. It has four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, but the group will need to have only three of them rebuilt. Imagine their surprise and delight when they broke open the packing cases and found that the fourth engine was sweet as honey -- still in perfect condition. A colony of bees had turned the engine into a hive and it was totally preserved in beeswax!

We often read in novels how a seemingly respectable person or family has some terrible secret which has been concealed from strangers for years. The English language possesses a vivid saying to describe this sort of situation. The terrible secret is called 'a skeleton in the cup board '. At some dramatic moment in the story the terrible secret becomes known and a reputation is ruined. The reader's hair stands on end when he reads in the final pages of the novel that the heroine, a dear old lady who had always been so kind to everybody, had, in her youth, poisoned every one of her five husbands.
It is all very well for such things to occur in fiction. To varying degrees, we all have secrets which we do not want even our closest friends to learn, but few of us have skeletons in the cupboard. The only person I know who has a skeleton in the cupboard is George Carlton, and he is very proud of the fact. George studied medicine in his youth. Instead of becoming a doctor, however, he became a successful writer of detective stories. I once spent an uncomfortable week-end which I shall never forget at his house. George showed me to the guestroom which, he said, was rarely used. He told me to unpack my things and then come down to dinner. After I had stacked my shirts and underclothes in two empty drawers, I decided to hang in the cupboard one of the two suits I had brought with me. I opened the cupboard door and then stood in front of it petrified. A skeleton was dangling before my eyes. The sudden movement of the door made it sway slightly and it gave me the impression that it was about to leap out at me. Dropping my suit, I dashed downstairs to tell George. This was worse than 'a terrible secret'; this was a real skeleton ! But George was unsympathetic. 'Oh, that,' he said with a smile as if he were talking about an old friend. 'That's Sebastian. You forget that I was a medical student once upon a time.'

怎么学好初一英语
(一)培养学习英语的兴趣
兴趣是最好的老师,浓厚的兴趣可培养同学们的求知欲,激起强大的学习动力,促使自己顽强拼搏,努力学习。古今中外取得巨大成就的人,无一不是对自己所从事的职业产生强烈、浓厚的兴趣。孔子曾说过,“知之者不如好之者。”讲的就是这个道理。要想培养自己学习外语的浓厚兴趣,首先就得明确英语学习的重要性,以及英语的重要地位,从而培养自己远大志向,形成明确而强烈的学习动机。经常看一些英语节目,听自己喜爱的英文歌曲,阅读英文故事等,都将非常有助于培养同学们的学习兴趣。
(二)树立信心
要想学好英语,除了有浓厚的兴趣外,还得有坚强的决心和高度的自信心。古人曾指出:“学者须先立志”,“无志则不能学”。一旦有了自信心,就能克服困难,满怀热情地投入到学习中来。英语学习过程中会遇到许许多多坎坎坷坷,成绩也会出现大的浮动,无论怎样,决不气馁、永不放弃。相信太阳每天总是新的,只要坚持,终会超越自己。
(三)养成良好习惯
在我们的教学中,发现有的孩子特聪明,但是英语反而学得并不好,相反,有些孩子智力一般,英语成绩却非常突出,到底问题出在哪里?我认为其中最重要的原因是学习习惯的差异影响着学生的学习效果。兴趣是最好的老师,可仅有兴趣是不够的,没有良好的英语学习习惯,不能坚持不懈地学习,英语是不可能学好的。特别是我们的新课标教学,词汇量增大,知识面拓宽,难度加大,孩于们的自觉性又不太好。要让他们主动积极,兴趣盎然地学好英语,我们必须在教学中有意识地培养他们良好的英语学习习惯。培根说:“习惯真是一种顽强而巨大的力量,它可以主宰人生。”孩子们的英语学习习惯决定学习结果那么我们在教学中就一定要逐步培养他们的好的学习习惯。就习惯的培养提出几点自己的看法:
1、听、说是培养语感、提高英语成绩的重要途径
强调课下每日听磁带的重要性。坚持听磁带的更主要目的是为了在听的同时,进行跟读;要求耳朵很敏锐地找出自己与原声带中发音不尽一样的地方,并不断减小差异,使自己的语音更加地道,把每日的听读作为一种习惯来养成。
此外, 听课文朗读磁带的同时也是在复习课文,它可以帮助更好的熟悉课文内容,培养语感。为什么我们在作题时,经常会莫名地选中一个感觉上正确、但又无法清楚解释其所以然的答案,其实它是大量正确语言输入信息在你脑海中形成的潜意识,即语感。我们的学生除了课堂几乎没有语言环境可交际,这就要求学生至少在课堂上听说英语。因此老师很关键,要给他们制造语言氛围,要配合适当的教学手段,用英语教英语。学生也尽量用英语思考,用英语表达。这样学生的注意力会更集中
2、养成良好的书面表达的习惯
对于初中一年级的孩子,现在的写作训练基本要求在50个词左右。学生应习惯于经常性地写一个小段落。一来是能提高对英语的自如运用,二来考察了孩子们的洞察力,培养其发现新生事物的能力。所以常写、多写是大有益处的。用英语写,一方面侧重于运笔的技能和技巧,二方面侧重于思想和情感的表达能力。书写和写作两方面是统一的,书写技巧差,字迹潦草不清,读的人看不清,直接影响了思想和情感的表达。在初一入门时,对学生的书写就应严格训练。写作习惯的培养虽然困难些,但也应该尽早进行。现在的新教材一模块围绕一个主题学习,学生可模仿写一篇短文。另外日记,值日报告等都是大家熟悉的练习写作的方式,坚持下来,效果很好。
3、及时消化知识的习惯
当天学的语言知识当天清,一周结束要巩固所学知识。老师可通过一周一次的检测来了解学生掌握知识的情况,以便及时补救,避免负面增长。对于那些习惯不是很好的孩子来说,要养成这些英语学习的习惯是一个漫长而痛苦的过程。因为习惯不是简单的束缚,不是简单的模仿

学好英语的技巧是什么
1. 利用构词法。熟记前缀、字根、后缀、派生词构成规律、合成词构成规律等,遇到生词时往往就可以猜测出它的意思。例如,前缀semi-表示“(一)半”,那么就容易推出semicircle是“半圆”的意思了。
2. 归类法。只要注意归类比较,意义上的相近、相反,读音、词形、所属范畴的相近等都可以成为加强记忆的手段。例如,我们可以把表示“笑”的词语放在一起来记:smile, laugh, giggle, grin, chuckle, beam, smirk, sneer, chortle等。
3. 有计划地反复重现。教育心理学把记忆分为瞬时记忆、短时记忆和长时记忆。科学研究证明,遗忘的规律是先快后慢,新记忆在最初几个小时内遗忘得最快,如果4至7天内不重复出现,记忆将会受到抑制,甚至完全消失。而有计划地反复重现已学词汇则有增强记忆的效果。

2、用英语想英语;
用英语想,也就是用英语思考。学英语而不用英语思考,必须学不好。用英语思考就是在用英语进行表达和理解时,没有本族语思考的介入,或者说本族语思考的介入被压缩到了极不明显的程度。这是真正流利、熟练的境界和标志。
3、背诵和多种练习结合
实事求是的说,超多背诵课文与超多多种练习的结合,乃是对于一切各不相同条件下的英语教学的普遍有效的方法。
4、针对不一样的教学资料采用不一样的教学方法;
英语的资料较多,包括语音、词汇、语法、交际等等资料,如果对每一项资料都采用同样的方法来进行教育教学,那么即使是再好的学生也不可能学好,再好的教师也不可能教好。因而,针对不一样的资料采用不一样的教学方法是不可违背的。
五、本学期提高教育教学质量的方法:
1、体现学生的主体地位,发挥教师的指导作用。充分发挥学生的主动性和用心性,激发学生的学习兴趣,帮忙学生摸索适合自我的学习方法,了解和掌握记忆规律,养成良好的学习习惯,培养学生自主学习的潜力。
