（一）草木之情
①佛教慈悲一切有眼睛的生命，故没有“人”而只有“有情”的概念，把人与动物并置于这一概念之内，一视同仁。这一来，只有植物降了等级，冷落在慈悲光圈之外，于是牛羊大嚼青草从来不被看作屠杀，工匠砍削竹木从来不被看作酷刑。
②佛祖如果多一点现代科学知识，其实可知草木虽无心肝，却也有神经活动和精神反应，甚至还有心理记忆和面部表情――至少比网络上的电子虚拟宠物要“有情”得多。比如我家的葡萄就是小姐身子丫环命，脾气大得很，心眼小得很。有一天，一株葡萄突然只剩下光光的主杆，叶子全部掉落在地任人践踏，不知道是什么原因。我想了一会，才记起来前一天给它修剪过三四片叶子，意在清除一些带虫眼的破叶，以使它更为靓丽清新。肯定是我这一剪子惹恼了它，让它怒从心头起，恶向胆边生，来个英勇地以死抗争。你小子剪什么剪？老娘躲不起，但死得起，不活了！
③不仅是这一株，其他葡萄也不好惹，决不容我随意造次。又一次，我见另一株葡萄被风雨吹得歪歪斜斜，好心让它转个身子，以便攀上新搭的棚架。我的手脚已经轻得不能再轻，态度已经和善得不能再和善，但还是再次逼出了惊天动地的自杀案，又是一次绿叶哗啦啦啦落尽，剩下光杆一根。直到两个多月后，自杀者出足了气，逞足了威风，枯干上才绽出一芽新绿，算是气色缓和心回意转。
④相比之下，资质平平的梓树就敦厚得多。工匠们建房施工时，把一棵碍事的小梓树砍了，又在树根旁挖灶熬浆糊，算是刀刑火刑无所不用其极，足足让小树死了十几遍。不料工匠离开半年之后，这树蔸无怨无悔，从焦土里抽枝发叶，顽强的活了过来，为主人很快撑起一片绿荫。在中国的文字里，木匠原名“梓匠”，故乡又名“桑梓”，可见这种树在历史上颇有年头。这与它的不屈不挠和任劳任怨不无关系。我只是觉得这种树稍稍有点蠢，比如初秋之际，寒暖不定，它们似乎是被气候信号搞糊涂了，不知眼下是什么季节，就又落叶又发芽的，如同连哭带笑，又加棉袄又摇扇，蠢得有点丢人现眼。
⑤“秋天来了！”我忍不住冲着它们呵斥。
⑥它们似乎听不懂，新芽还是冲着落叶往外窜。
⑦草木的心性其实各个不一。牵牛花对光亮最敏感，每天早晨速开速谢，只在朝霞泼地的那一刻爆出蓝花一串，相当于植物的打鸣，或者是色彩的早操。桂花最守团队纪律，金色或银白的花粒，说有就全树都有，说无就全树都无，变化只在瞬间，似有共同行动的准确时机和及时联系的局域网络，谁都不得自由主义的擅自进退。比较而言，只有月季花最为娇生惯养。它们享受了最肥沃的土壤，最敞亮的受阳区位，最频繁的喷药杀虫，但还是爱长不长，倦容满面，暮气沉沉。硬要长的话，突然窜出一根长枝，挂上一两朵孤零零的花，就把你打发掉。
⑧当一棵树开花的时候，谁说它就不是在微笑呢？当一片红叶飘落在地的时候，谁说它不是一口哀怨的咯血呢？当瓜叶枯黄甚至枯黑的时候，谁说这不是它们在咳嗽或者呻吟？有一些橘色的或紫色的小野花突然在院墙里满地开放，如同一些吵吵闹闹的来客。它们在随后的一两年里突然不见踪影，不知去了哪里，满园静寂无声。我只能把这事看作是客人的愤然而去和含怒绝交――但我在何事上得罪了它们？
⑨再说我们同时栽下的一些橘树吧。手心手背都是肉，我对它们同样的挖坑同样的修剪同样的追肥，但靠路边的三棵长得很快，眼看就要开花挂果，其他几株却无精打采，单薄瘦弱，长来长去还是侏儒，甚至叶子一片片在蜷缩。有一位农妇曾对我说：你要对它们多讲讲话，你尤其不能分亲疏厚薄，要一碗水端平――你对它们没好脸色，它们就活得更没有劲头了。

(二)板凳狗和它的一朵小黄花

板凳狗每天都去郊外的湖边散步，一年四季从不间断。
这是一个秋天的早晨，他来到湖边，看见一丛黄色的小花，便俯下身来闻一闻，很香。
第二天，他又来到湖边，发现那一丛花不见了。
“花儿哪里去了?”他自言自语地说。
这时，有一个很柔弱的声音传过来：“是让几个孩子摘走了，都摘走了。”
板凳狗俯下身来找一找，发现在原来开满黄花的地方，有一朵很小很小的花还留在那儿。
