The new year is the perfect time to finally take up ceramics, learn Mandarin, start a book club, start rock-climbing, or plant a garden. In , the Cut has practical advice on trying something new. Make bowls, not just resolutions.
I’ve always considered myself a relatively well-rounded person — someone whose attitude to work-life balance is “healthy,” or at least consistent. And yet early last year at a barbecue in South Africa, a woman asked me a question that caused me to doubt this view of myself — or rather, her response to my response did.
“What do you do?” she asked.
“I work for a magazine,” I told her.
The woman laughed a little, as if she’d found my answer simple. “No, I mean, what do you do?” she asked, then moved on.
Perplexed, I listened to others answer this question over the evening. Some said they were surfers; others said they hiked, and many played music. Some people said they had been trying to improve their cooking skills. Others talked about their kids.
I’ve never heard such a variety of answers to the “what do you do?” question in the United States — we all respond with what we do for work — and that, I think, is no coincidence. Work defines our national identity, so it tends to define us individually too. More than half of us get a sense of identity from our jobs, even though more of us, some 55 percent, feel dissatisfied with them.
While identifying with your job isn’t bad on its own — who doesn’t want to make money doing something that contributes to their self-worth? — it takes on an almost fetishistic quality here. Like when overwork apologists blog about how great it is to take conference calls on Thanksgiving between apple-pie bakes. (In a clumsy stab at social rebellion, this particular blog post is called “My work is my life. Is that a problem?”) Or like when companies weave overwork into their brand identity, a trend The New Yorker’s Jia Tolentino documented earlier this year. In a piece about the emergent gig economy, Tolentino examines a series of recruitment ads posted by Fiverr, a TaskRabbit-esque online service marketplace:
“One ad, prominently displayed on some New York City subway cars, features a woman staring at the camera with a look of blank determination. “You eat a coffee for lunch,” the ad proclaims. “You follow through on your follow through. Sleep deprivation is your drug of choice. You might be a doer.’”
Americans, so the cultural-industrial myth goes, are doers. But is that all we are? Not if we want to be healthy, according to Patricia W. Linville, an associate professor at the Fuqua School of Business and psychology department at Duke University. Linville has studied the idea of “self-complexity” — or how a human sorts the many traits, roles, and other identity markers that make up him- or herself. She has found that the narrower a person’s vision of their “self” is, the more prone they are to depression and anxiety. For instance, Linville writes, consider a woman who thinks about her life mainly in terms of her career and her relationship to her husband. If her husband says something dismissive, half of her “self” takes a hit. If her boss issues her a harsh reprimand, again, that’s an attack on 50 percent of her identity.
On the other hand, someone who considers themselves in a variety of lights — as a mother, sister, doctor, surfer, crossword-puzzle wiz, etc. — has less emotional dependence on any single one of these identity “baskets.” Thus, if this person faces a professional setback or deals with a difficult breakup, they will be able to weather it more steadily, and get back on their feet more quickly. A harsh blow to 20 percent of you isn’t going to knock you out.
Attaining self-complexity is not an easy task, especially if you’ve identified with your work for most of your life. But hobbies can help kickstart the journey. For instance, my friend Allie Rawson, a 25-year-old employee at LinkedIn, is a hardworking person to whom balance does not come easily. But nowadays, in addition to working at LinkedIn full time, she sails and takes improv classes. “It’s really easy for work to become the only thing in your life,” Rawson says. Especially when surrounded by workaholics: Her team is comprised mainly of ex-consultants, so “there is a culture of staying late. It feels virtuous to be working a lot of hours.”
When Rawson first started working, she says, she made many mistakes — typical for someone just starting out, but also unnerving for someone whose identity rests on professional competence. Whenever she went out on the water, though, Rawson relaxed: For a brief time, her negative feelings dissipated. “It was nice to have something I felt I was good at,” she says. “Like, I might not be great at my job right now, but if I go sailing, I’ll feel good.”
Rawson is prone to depression, and she says that having hobbies that represent and nourish her various sides of self is the best means she’s found to combat her symptoms. “It’s important to have more than one way to connect with yourself,” she says. “Having a creative outlet and having a connection with nature are two things that are especially important for me. Sailing and improv fill those [categories].”
Another friend, Kaitlin Hansen, is also an example of healthy self-complexity, though her approach differs from Rawson’s. Hansen’s got a busy schedule, too — over the past year she helped prepare an inmate for his parole hearing, tutored at a federal prison in Brooklyn and worked with the Jails Action Coalition (“and tried to work out once in a while,” she says, laughing). Unlike Rawson, though, Hansen says her hobbies don’t speak to different aspects of her identity. They all align with her view of herself as a person committed to social justice, as does her job (which she admits is an immense privilege). For Hansen, who has enjoyed a fair amount of mental stability throughout her life, hobbies amplify a preexisting sense of self-complexity — and it’s not exactly self-complexity, either.

(一)丰富词汇,为提高阅读理解能力打下坚实的基础。词汇是阅读理解的“拦路虎”,想要掌握足够的词汇,必须有合理的途径。在多年的教学过程中,我总结出三种行之有效的方法:
1、抓好课堂教学质量,教会融会贯通。在课堂词汇教学中,对强调“词不离句”,不要单纯的死记硬背单词的意思,而是把它置于特定语境中,结合句意来把握词意。同时严格要求词汇学习,精确掌握词的读音、拼写和用法。
2、教学习构词法,掌握构词的一些基本规则。比如,加前缀表反义的有:dis—,un—,in—等;加后缀转化为形容词的有:—able,—sive,—tive,—less,—ful等;名词可加—ly或—y转化为形容词等等。通过构词规则,扩大词汇量的积累,力图达到举一反三的学习效果。
3、掌握科学的记单词的方法,必须做到反复记忆、机械记忆和理解记忆相结合。教师要督促学习,对书后附录的词汇表,进行定时定量的全面检测。
(二)扩大阅读量,丰富的文化背景知识。高考阅读题型越来越趋于多样化,形式也不拘一格。选材范围包括科学、社会、文化、政治和经济等各个方面,体裁也包括记叙文、议论文、说明文等。这就要求我们在平时的教学过程中,必须注重指导多阅读,形成良好的阅读思维。
(三)掌握阅读时的基本技巧。正确的方法能起到事半功倍的效果,所以绝不可小觑提高阅读理解能力的技巧
1、带着问题阅读文章。阅读材料问题的设置往往都非常巧妙,它集中反映了文章的基本信息,先把问题看一遍,带着问题阅读全文,能有针对性的切入,找到突破点。
2、找准主题句,把握文章脉络。主题句对全文起到提示、启迪、概括和归纳的作用,一些主旨大意题、归纳概括题等,往往可以直接从主题句中找到答案。
3、挑出文章的关键词。关键词能反应文中的主要事实和特定细节,大部分是名词、动词或其他重要的修饰词,在阅读时可以把他们标注出来。此外,还要特别注意and、or等表示并列关系的词和but、however、ontheotherhand、though等表示转折关系的词,以及so、therefore、sothat等表示因果关系的词。
4、推测生词的意思。在阅读文章时,难免会碰到不认识的词,这个时候千万不要慌张,根据上下文的意思及整篇文章的主旨,来合理推测生词的词义。

1. 关注学生是否能读懂文章
读懂不等于通读, 应该在通读的基础上快速对文章主要内容作出正确的判断或者概括。有些学生总习惯读一遍文章,然后开始答题,结果只能走马观花。因此,教师应教给学生怎样去读,怎样把握文章意图,督促学生真正地深入到文章内部去了解作者的内心。
2. 帮助学生把握作者整体的观点或态度
每一种文体都有各自的特点,比如议论文,议论文的阅读就在于是否准确把握作者的意图和观点。所以,教师应该教给学生怎样借助关键语句或者关键词汇快速提炼作者的观点,从而总体把握文章意图。
3. 引导学生关注议论文的论证方法
论证是议论文一个很关键的步骤。作者会通过很多方法来引起读者的思考,并唤起读者的共鸣。在某个程度上,对论证方法的考查比对论点的考查, 更能够帮助学生把握作者的论证思路,从而理解作者的写作意图。
4. 学会归纳题目设置特点
议论文在题目设置上也会呈现和其他文体不一样的特点,因为议论文阅读重点考查作者观点和主旨大意,所以议论文阅读题干部分一般会用到以下这样的句子:“What does theauthor think of...? ”, “Which of the following opinions does theauthor accept? ”,等等。
三、解题策略
议论文来应注重以下解题策略:着眼全文,关注观点,强调论证,弱化细节,就会化难为易。具体如下。
1. 通读全文,了解话题和背景
读第一遍时速度要快一点, 目的只是了解作者谈论的话题、背景和作者倾向。读完后可以在心里默默概括一下作者的主要观点。
2. 细读题目,把握考查方向
在细读题目时, 可以把一些可能和作者观点不符的选项圈出来,在之后的精读中进行验证。对于题目的分类很重要,要判断好题目所考查的是理解文章细节还是归纳作者的写作意图,这样再读时就能够用不同的方法进行解决。
3. 精读文章,比对筛选答案
对于判断为考查细节的题, 要准确找到文章所提及的地方,细细品读上下文,直接做出正确的选择。对于考查观点或论证方法的题,先不要急于给出答案,可以用排除法先排除明显和文章观点不一致的选项, 再集中精力比对剩下的选项。

要提高阅读能力必须保证一定的阅读量。要养成整体阅读的好习惯,就因该督促和鼓励学生在课外进行大量的整体阅读的自我训练。实践证明,阅读量越大,储存的信息越丰富,可供选择的相关因素越多,学生便可利用这些因素对作者的意图做出分析判断,使阅读能力得到培养和提高,而且积累了相关的文化背景知识,从而激发学生的阅读兴趣,形成一个提高阅读能力的良性循环。但是在教学中教师不能操之过急,贪多求快,要根据学生的实际情况安排阅读量,做到循序渐进、持之以恒。要使学生在阅读中享受和体验到阅读的乐趣,从而增加阅读的内驱力。
大多数学生相信,只要努力学习必有收获。而现实情况,阅读中常常遇到困难,使很多人无法感受到学习语言的乐趣。此时老师应适时帮助学生纠正不良的阅读习惯。不良的'学习习惯主要表现为以下的四个方面:
(1)一遇到生词就求助于字典,久而久之就会形成没有工具书就无法阅读的定势,从而丧失独立思考和解决问题的能力,再说字典里找到的汉语释文往往不是原文的绝对等值,且工具书不会也不可能容纳所有的语言现象。
(2)重复阅读迟滞理解力的集中,减慢阅读的速度,因此。往往会挫伤学生的阅读兴趣,所以增强学生阅读的自信非常重要,要用勇气调动自己的全部知识和智慧,于一口气跳障碍看到底。
(3)视幅小,即阅读不以意群或句子成分为单位,而是以单词或词组为单位。这样做,不仅将部分的注意力分散于词形和词的发音上,而且增大了语音信息块的密度,引起不必要的耗损和摩擦,从而降低阅读效力。
(4)心译,即一边读一边翻译,这是一种较普遍的阅读行为。阅读的宗旨是培养语感和提高阅读的熟练程度,用外语解决问题,心译显然是不可取的。因此只有纠正和克服以上阅读的不良习惯,才能提高学生的阅读效率。
阅读能力的培养与提高不是一朝一夕之功,要在长期的坚持阅读中获得。下面谈几种高中学生阅读能力提高的技巧。
(1) 抓中心思想 学生根据自己水平选取一定长度而有趣的阅读材料或面对教师提供的材料,不作预习,按速度要求限时读完后,应该对文章意思大致做到心中有数了。然后对自己预测进行检验,重新阅读一遍,或与其他学生交流,或者向老师进行反馈,进一步明确文章的中心大意。抓住文章的中心思想,除读懂文章、领会意思外,还可以培养训练学生归纳综合的能力。学生具有了一定的归纳综合能力,会有助于他们在阅读中更能明确清晰地把握文章的中心内容。
(2) 找主题句 每篇文章都有一个中心思想,每个段落都是围绕中心而写的,而每个段落里常有一个主题句表达这个段落的中心思想,其他句子则围绕主题句而展开。学生在阅读文章时可通过寻找每段的主题句来理解段落的大意,来把握整篇文章的大意。大多数的主题句位于段落开头,另一些位于段落中间或结尾。
(3) 猜词 在阅读文章时难免会遇到一些不熟悉的词。这时有些学生就会常查阅字典,这种习惯对阅读是很不利的,既影响了阅读速度,又打破了文章的连贯性。因此高中学生要学会猜词义。这种猜词能力是阅读能力的一个重要方面,准确地猜词能扩大学生的词汇量,加强单词的记忆。因为经过自己思考获得的东西咋大脑中留下的痕迹更深刻,同时阅读速度也大大地提高。文章中词的词义可以通过上下文中的同义词关系、反义词关系,理解整个句子或段落以及词的构成方法等形式获得。
(4) 推断作者的意图和观点 在读完文章、了解文章大意后,还要向自己提出更高的要求,那就是根据作者使用的语言、叙述的事实、引用的例证、人物的对话及动作、心理活动的描写等推断出作者写这篇文章的意图是什么,他想要说明什么问题,表达什么观点及持有什么样的态度。这是一个通过表面文字推测文章深层结构含义的判断、推理过程,它能推动学生积极地思考,培养较高的理解能力、准确的判断能力和果断的推理能力。这些能力的获得有利于

Step one: “Warming up and Leading-in”. As we all know that “interest is the best teacher”, so here, I will play a short English video about to cultivate Ss’ learning interests and create a relaxing English learning atmosphere.
Step two: Pre-reading. In this step, I will ask students the question that and invite them to look at the title to predict what the passage is about. No matter what their answers are, I will give them positive feedback.
Purpose: during the independent thinking stage, students will recall their learned knowledge. Although not all the answers are correct, they will be more concentrated on the textbook and become more eager to read more.
Step three: While Reading. It will cost me 20 minutes and consists of extensive reading and intensive reading activities.
First comes the Extensive reading activity. I will introduce the reading tip of skimming to facilitate their reading, I will say to them that “when doing skimming, lets focus on the key words and sentences of each paragraph instead of reading the passage sentence by sentence, I will give you 3 minutes, after skimming, you are expected to tell me how many parts can the whole passage be divided into and the what are them about.”
Purpose: the task can impart the students with the reading strategies of skimming, which can greatly improve their reading comprehension ability and independent thinking ability.
Then, let’s move to another important reading activity--intensive reading, this time, students should read the passage very carefully, at the same time they should underline the words and phrases which they don’t understand, and discuss with their partners the following questions:

Next, I will explain some important language points. For the new words, I will lead the Ss to guess the meaning of the new words according to the context. 一、读不完文章,做不完题,为什么?
1.是没有养成良好的做题习惯。有些同学做题左顾右盼,无法马上进入考试紧张状态,时间浪费在了考试以外的事情上。

解决方案:

2.做题方法。这里只强调做题顺序,大家更倾向于哪种呢?是A→Q→A(A=Article,Q=Question),即先从整体去阅读文章,后看问题,还是Q→A→Q,即先把整个问题快速看一遍,然后带着问题在文章中找答案?选用前者的学生是心里原因在作怪,总觉得不读文章就看题好像肯定做不对似的,心里很不踏实。
这里建议大家选用后者。根据效率原则和目标原则,首先要求学生加强具有目的性的训练,我们要的是什么,通过什么途径可以达到,而且更快更好的达到。此种方法最大的特点就是节省时间,而且针对性很强,如果问题是事实性的和细节性的,那准确率也是比较高的,但它的缺点就是在解决具有推理判断或是综合性的问题时效果就不太明显了。这样大家要灵活运用两者方法,寻找适合自己的解题技巧。
二、如何应对高中英语阅读中的长难句?
近年来,英语阅读解题加强了对长,难句的考察,阅读材料中出现了不少省略句,复合句和特长句,给正确理解全文造成了很大困难。实际上,一般情况下,不在长难句中设题。文章难,题不难。一旦考到长,难句,大家也不要心慌。
应对长难句的解题技巧:

3.3.2查读
这种阅读方法适合于寻找某些特点的细节,而不涉及到文章的整体。如First aid一文中的2个课后习题都非常适合查读时解答。
3.3.3精读
精读是给学生足够的时间去仔细阅读文章中的细节,精读前,我先布置任务,题型有填写表格,针对文章内容的问题等,让学生在精读中寻找答案,促进学生对文章细节的理解。
3.4注重读写相结合
根据课文的内容让学生用自己的话复述、改写,这样既有利于对课文的整体理解,又有利于学生写作能力的提高。有时我还将课文内容编成完形填空,短文改错等题型,有利于巩固、深化对语言材料的理解,提高正确使用语言的能力。
3.5帮助分析长句和难句
长句和难句中包含较多的从句和较复杂的语法结构,是理解中的难点,阅读后,我都要结合语法教学,通过分析句子结构对新出现的语法现象进行详细地说明,进行整体理解,不断章取义,帮助学生搬开这些阅读中的绊脚石。
4. 加强课后的阅读训练

英国著名学者鲁姆哈特的相互作用模式(the interact model)表明:读者的阅读能力是由三种图式来决定的,它们是语言图式、内容图式和形式图式。语言图式指的是读者对阅读材料的掌握程度,内容图式指的是读者对文章涉及的主题的熟悉程度,而形式图式则指的是读者对文章体裁的了解程度。在这三种图式中,语言图式是理解文章文字的基础,内容图式是理解文章内容的依据,而形式图式则是调用内容的能力。三者相辅相成,缺一不可(何广铿,)。美国心理语言学家Frank Smith在Understanding Reading一书中亦指出:“阅读不是一种消极的活动。读者要想获得知识,必须做出积极的贡献。至少要做出与作者同样大的贡献。”Smith所说的“贡献”就是指读者积极的思维活动。鲁姆哈特和Smith的观点都明确指出了阅读的正确过程,即从识别单词、领悟句意到理解篇章乃至摄取知识,实际上就是一种提出问题、解决问题、排疑解难的思维过程。为了使学生获取知识的过程更加符合学习规律,并在知识学习过程中发展能力,学会学习,笔者在教学中加强了知识形成过程的教学,把阅读教学的重点放在了如下几方面。
一、重视语言能力,扩充语言图式
阅读理解包括阅读和理解两个方面。其中阅读可以说是一个“破译文字符号的编码程序”的过程,亦是鲁姆哈特所说的掌握文章文字内容的过程。要“破译”文中的文字,没有一定的语言能力是不行的。语言能力是理解文章的基础。没有掌握相应的语言图式,读者就不能识别文章中的词、短语和句子,也不能利用文章提供的信息来调用相应的内容图式和形式图式,当然也就谈不上对文章的理解了。英国语言学家S.Pit Corder在其《应用语言学导论》一书中对语言能力作了极好的论述,他指出:“语言能力指辨认和造出合乎语法的句子以及辨认句子之间意义上关联的能力。”要“辨认”和“造出”合乎语法的句子,就要掌握尽可能多的单词和基本的语法、句式。因此,在阅读教学中,教师首先应重视对学生语言能力的培养,丰富学生的感知内容,为后面的理解加工阶段做准备。
1、重视词汇教学
词汇是最基本的语言材料,读者的词汇量越大,理解语言的范围就越广。词汇的记忆与储存不够,就会造成在阅读过程中因“生词障碍”而“处处碰壁”的现象,无法理解句意。可以说,掌握足够的词汇是理解文章的关键。但是许多学生一提到记单词就怕,我们应帮助学生找到合适的记忆方法来减轻他们的学习负担,提高学习效率。经常运用的帮助学生记忆单词的方法有6种:同类记忆法、对比记忆法、读音记忆法、图表记忆法、同音异形记忆法和搭配记忆法。教师平时要培养学生养成归纳同义词、近义词、同类词、反义词的良好习惯,要求学生尽可能多记忆一些有用的词组、短语、搭配,将词扩展为更大的语义单位,这样不但可以提高阅读速度,而且有助于在阅读中把握文脉。同时,教师还应教授学生猜测生词的方法,如:构词法、定义解释法、对比关系法、因果关系法、上下文暗示法等,尽可能地训练学生的猜词能力,让他们明白这些生词既不是孤立存在,也并非高深莫测,碰到生词切勿惊慌。
2、重视句式识别能力的培养
掌握了足够的单词,还不足以能完全理解文章的意思。文章中的难句,常令人望而生畏。高考的发展趋势之一就是难句增多、句子类型多变,不但测试考生的阅读技能,也测试考生的心理素质。例如NMET 阅读理解C篇的首句:Decision-thinking is not unlike poker------it often matters not only what you think, but also what others think you think and what you think they think you think. 这是开篇句,也是主题句,有28个单词,语法结构复杂。但是,如果能够抓住关键词not only…but also, what, what, and what, 再确定各个主谓语,这个句子的意识也就不难理解了。由此可见,阅读的“译码过程”并非是逐词翻译、对号入座。人们在理解过程中,实际上并不需要逐词逐句“尽收眼底”,熟练的阅读者往往抓住一句话中的关键词语即可领悟句子大意。其实,这就是句式识别能力。在教学中,为了培养学生的这种句式识别能力,教师可以从动词的五种基本句型抓起;注重教学并列连词and,but,for等连接的并列句;认真抓好主从复合句的教学;注意辨别一些修辞性句式。读者只有在识别句式的基础上,才能在最短的时间内捕捉句子的关键词并进行语义编码,促进意义的理解。
二、扩大阅读量,丰富内容图式
掌握了语言文字,并不等于掌握了文章内容,这就涉及到“理解”的问题,亦是鲁姆哈特所说的对文章所涉及主题的熟悉程度了。现在的阅读理解题在选材上非常注重蕴含时代气息和具有可读性,要求读者具备丰富的背景知识。语言和文化有着十分密切的关系,只有正确理解该语言所属的社会及其文化,才能真正运用好这种语言。要丰富学生的内容图式,教师可从如下几方面着手:
1、注重培养学生对异国文化的敏锐性
众所周知,学习语言必须有一定的语言环境。然而,目前我们教学生学习英语,不可能向他们提供像母语一样的语言学习环境。教师要设法培养学生对异国文化的敏锐性,尽可能为学生创设一定的语言环境,培养学生用英语思维的习惯。古人云:“工欲善其事,必先利其器。”教师应订阅一些英语刊物,丰富自己的背景知识,还要有意识地将英美文化的特点介绍给学生,使他们能够更好更快地了解英美国家的文化背景。学生们只有了解了英美国家的文化背景,才能正确理解并合理运用所学语言。
2、扩充学生的背景知识
有的学生英语知识掌握得不错,却仍然看不懂文章,原因就在于他们缺乏背景知识的积累。可以说,生活是教师组织教学取之不尽的素材源泉。在课堂上,我们可以把枯燥的语法讲解变得生动有趣,谈论的话题可以从学生身边的轶闻趣事扩展到国内外的大事。通过各种各样的话题,我们就可以拉近学生与外界的距离,丰富他们关于客观世界的知识。
3、激发学生的课外阅读兴趣
要学好外语,必须依靠大量的输入和实践。因此,为了使学生更客观、更深刻地了解异域文化,教师要激发学生的课外阅读兴趣,增加学生课外阅读的份量。要搞好课外阅读教学,主要靠激励和指导。孔子云:“知之者,不如好之者;好之者,不如乐之者。”用于学生课外阅读的读物最好是一些学生感兴趣的题材。据心理学家研究,生动、幽默、情节曲折的作品往往能抓住青少年的心。学生可以在课外阅读一些原著或经过改写的原著,包括世界名著、故事、幽默、时政、科技文章等。通过阅读原汁原味的著作,学生可以体会到世界各地的风土人情,感受到异国的历史文化氛围,这样他们就不难读懂一个民族、一段历史、一种文化了。
三、区别文章体裁,完善形式图式
如果理解了文章的词、句,头脑里也有了相应的内容图式,同样也难以保证阅读的顺利进行,这就涉及到形式图式了。对形式图式的掌握可以帮助学生较快地找到文章的中心词句,从而较好地理解作者的写作意图。故教师在平时的教学中必须结合不同文体的文章,系统地讲授不同文体的结构特点,分析文章的结构,培养学生调用形式图式的能力,使他们懂得怎样利用文章中的线索,进行积极的思维活动,从而把握作者的思路和意图,达到对所读材料的充分理解,保证准确完整地获取信息。
四、加强学习指导,掌握阅读技能
掌握语言知识并不等于具备阅读能力。只有掌握并运用一系列正确的阅读方法,才能将习得的语言知识转化为具有个性心理特征的阅读技能。一般来说,作者是按照一定的思维模式写作的,学习和掌握阅读技能就是使自己的思维模式与作者写作时的思维模式相吻合,从而加速理解阅读材料的过程。“授人以鱼,不如授人以渔”,教师还应分层次地给予学生学习方法上的指导,培养他们的自学能力。下面简单谈谈关于训练“速度”方面的做法。
1、培养快速阅读整体文章的能力。
《会考大纲》要求的阅读速度是每分钟40-60个单词,高考要求的速度则快的多,达到了每分钟100个单词左右。因此,必须对学生加强阅读速度的训练。如:可以让几个学生合作,在规定的时间内读完文章,读不完也要停下;然后大家拼凑内容,复述文章。教师要随着学生阅读能力的提高相应地缩短规定的阅读时间。这一训练方法可以保证学生在规定时间内理解文章大意,提高阅读速度。
2、增加课外阅读量,提高阅读速度
课外阅读大多体现为泛读。泛读,不言而喻,贵在于“泛”。“泛”不仅要求阅读的量要大,也要求阅读的题材、体裁要宽。与精读相比,泛读是针对粗调输入的技能,因此阅读速度要快,同时也要把握好对语篇的理解。泛读也可以与课内的精读内容相结合,教师可以为课文配上同类题材的姊妹篇作为泛读材料,使精读和泛读相得益彰。对于特别优秀的作品,泛读也可以处理成半精读,让学生在课堂上展开讨论,体会阅读、讨论带来的愉悦,巩固学科知识,拓宽知识面。
总之,阅读理解是一个复杂而灵活的过程,是读者的“概念能力”、“背景知识”和“加工策略”三方面相互作用的结果。三者缺一不可。教师要立足于学生,从学生的实际出发,把阅读能力的培养贯穿于整个中学教学阶段。笔者从教以来,一直都在探求一种适合于山区学校学生的英语教学方法,并持之以恒地将它运用到教学实践中去。“读”的技能在现代社会中起着越来越重要的地位。怎样培养出具有较高阅读能力、适应社会发展的人才,是我一直在思考、探求的问题,也是我今后的努力方向。

解决高中英语阅读理解长句分析难题的意见建议覃春妮

摘 要:根据历年英语科高考考试大纲说明,对考生英语听说读写能力的考查中,读写能力最能体现考生的英语水平。针对高中英语阅读理解长句分析存在的主要问题,提出解决高中生长句分析障碍的意见建议。

英语新课标要求:“综合语言运用能力体现在语言技能、语言知识、文化意识、情感态度和学习策略的有机结合上。”这五维目标成为科学合理的教学目标价值体系,为解决高中英语阅读理解长句分析难题指明了方向。为解决长句教学观念滞后、教学方式单一、语法知识薄弱、长句教学针对性不强等难题,我们应采取端正教学态度、强化技巧训练和注重英语文化知识积累等措施。
一、树立正确的思想观念,为化解长句分析难题提供合理的思想引导
端正教与学的态度,增强动力机制。导致长句分析困难是由老师和学生两面原因造成的,因此,要转变思想观念,强化目的性教育,端正教与学的态度。老师一方面要优化教学观念,充分认识长句分析在高中英语教学中的地位和作用,提高自身综合素质;另一方面又通过案例分析和经典试题等方式,引导学生充分认识长句分析不仅是高考英语成败的关键因素,还是学好英语的重要途径,从思想、行动上都重视长句分析的学习与训练。
鼓励学生坚定信心,增强克服困难的勇气。提高长句分析能力是脚踏实地、循序渐进的过程。在点点滴滴的进步中收获喜悦,增强学生的决心和信心,逐渐摆脱畏难怕苦的心理障碍,激发学生学习英语的兴趣,养成学英语用英语的好习惯,提高“我要学”的积极性、主动性和自觉性。
二、注重长句分析策略和技巧训练,为化解长句分析难题提供良好的技能支撑
把好阅读理解的训练关,掌握“抓主干”(主谓宾)、“握重心”(中心词句)、“解枝叶”(从句、修饰成分)的分析策略。根据长句的各种情形,通过针对性、系列化的指导和训练,特别是讲解和练习全国各地的历年高考试题,让学生深刻学会活用长句分析的策略和技巧,这是破解长句的密码。比如:This one consists of a long chain of compounds called cresol groups linked in a polymer. Cresol contains reactive components that make it highly unstable in its polymeric form,a feature…(2012全国高考江苏卷)由过去分词短语called cresol groups和linked in a polymer做后置定语,分别修饰a long chain of compounds 和cresol groups;定语从句that make it highly unstable in its polymeric form修饰reactive components,补充说明Cresol特性。
把好长句拓展的训练关,形成多层次运用语法知识的分析技能。为提高学生长句分析和读写能力,根据教学目的进行多方面的简单句、并列句和复合句拓展训练。比如,Many students study hard.拓展为In order to improve their English,many students study so hard in the classroom that they forget to go out after class. 把The 2012 Olympic Games were held in London. 扩展为The 2012 Olympic Games,which was a great success, were held in London.或转变成强调句型It was in London that the 2012 Olympic Games were held.
三、突出英语文化知识的积累,为化解长句分析难题提供有利的思维方式
精心挑选阅读材料,丰富学生的文化背景知识。为弥补学生英语文化背景知识的不足,按照内容与教材相关,又要适当延伸的要求,认真精选富有知识性和趣味性的`阅读材料,选取西方风土人情、文化习俗、社会热点、宗教信仰和生活方式等内容的材料,涉及日常对话、新闻报道等丰富多样的题材,熟悉英语习语、谚语、典故等多种习惯表达方式。比如,As for ANWR’s impact on the California power crisis, environmentalists point out that oil is responsible for only 1% of the Golden State’s electricity output and just 3% of the nation’s. 假如了解美国十九世纪四五十年代的“淘金热”,学生就知道“Golden State”指的是加利福尼亚州。
区分汉英文化思维的差别,使学生形成英语思维能力。通过专项教学与训练、自学等方式,让学生深刻体会到汉语重意合,英语重形合;汉语语义重心常在后,英语语义重心常在前;汉语的思维方式为螺旋式,英语的思维方式为直线式等区别,并主要以词汇、句型、语法、语篇等形式表现出来。在长句分析的过程中,让学生逐渐摆脱汉语式思维的束缚,排除母语“负迁移”的干扰,培养良好的英文语感,以英语思维看懂弄清阅读材料的内容,把握材料的主题、关键词和细节等。比如,英语注重形合,常以一个主谓结构为主干、层层拓展,并以动词的不同形式使句子结构更严谨分明。In my view,I would be very happy if we could see over night a situation in which all homes in the U.K. were cabled to receive extra services.主句是I would be very happy,主干后接if引导的状语从句,if从句中又带一个由in which引导的定语从句。即“依我看来,要是能一夜之间看到英国家家户户都能收看到额外的电视节目,我会很高兴”.
