Preparation and Characterization of Temperature-responsive Porous Monoliths

A new temperature-responsive porous monolith has been prepared by surface-initiated activators generated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (AGET ATRP) grafting poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) within the pores of the porous polymer monolith. The grafting copolymerization was carried out by a method based on a continuous flow-through technique without special deoxygenation procedure needed in the general ATRP. The addition of ascorbic acid could counteract the oxidation effect of oxygen diffusing into the reaction system. The resulting grafted monolith was characterized by a mercury intrusion method and the size of macropore was 3.65 μm, which was suitable for flow through the monolith for HPLC. The thermally responsive property of the grafted monolith was evaluated by HPLC using steroids with various hydrophobicities as probes. Through determination of retention factor of each steroid on the grafted monolith at different temperatures using water as mobile phase, it was found that the slope of the plot of retention factor of each steroid versus the temperature changed around the low critical solution temperature (LCST, 32 ℃) of PNIPAAm in water. It was relative to the grafted PNIPAAm temperature sensitivity that a hydrophobic and hydrophilic alternation would take place around its LCST.Based on this thermally responsive property, the grafted monolith was used as stationary phase for HPLC and to separate the steroids using water as mobile phase by changing the column temperature. As a mobile phase, water is much better than organic solvents concerning the environment.

Preparation and characterization of aligned carbon nanotubes coated with titania nanoparticles

Well-aligned carbon nanotubes coated with titania (TiO2) were prepared by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD), and the sequential experiments including carbon nanotubes preparation, air-oxidation purification and titania nanoparticles coating were performed at different temperatures in the same reactor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), and energy- dispersive X-ray spectra (EDX) demonstrated the well-aligned nanotubes and TiO2 nanoparticles in close proximity and the average diameter of TiO2 nanoparticles was 11.5 nm.

Preparation and Characterization of Microencapsulated Hexadecane Used for Thermal Energy Storage

Polyurea microcapsules about 2.5 μm in diameter containing phase change material for thermal energy storage application were synthesized and characterized by interfacial polycondensation method with toluene-2,4-diisocyanate and ethylenediamine as monomers in an emulsion system. Hexadecane was used as a phase change material and OP, which is nonionic surfactant, and used as an emulsifier. The chemical structure and thermal behavior of the microcapsules were investigated by FTIR and thermal analysis respectively. The results show encapsulated hexadecane has a good potential as a solar energy storage material.

Preparation and Characterization of Refuse Derived Fuel for Pyrolysis and Gasification by Bindless High Pressure Briquet

Abstract:A new type of refuse derived fuel (RDF) for pyrolysis and gasification was prepared from municipal solid waste (MSW) in the presence of a small quantity of coal by bindless high pressure technology at room temperature. The physicochemical property of RDF was tested. Orthogonal experiment method was used to optimize the process parameters using dropping strength (mechanical strength) and thermal stability of the RDF as indices for quality of RDF. The result shows that the mixture of MSW and coal with a total moisture ranging from 5% to 17% can be easily compressed into RDF briquettes at a pressure above 70 MPa. When the briquetting pressure is higher than 100 kN and moisture content is about 10%, the qualified RDF can be obtained. The orthogonal experiment shows that the moisture can greatly affect the mechanical strength of RDF, while all the technique parameters have no obvious influence on thermal stability of RDF. Preparation and characterization of 3-dimensionally ordered macroporous SiC

Three-dimensionally (3D) long range ordered macroporous SiC ceramics were prepared through infiltrating polymethylsilane (PMS) into the 3D ordered sacrificial silica template, pyrolysis and the template removal. It was found that the pore size (84-658 nm), BET surface area (299.44-584.64 m2/g) and micropore volume (0.25-0.64 cm3/g) of the achieved porous SiC can be tailored by utilizing different sizes silica sphere templates. There exist three kinds of pores in the porous ceramics: sphere inversed pores, windows and mesopores (2-5 nm). The sphere inversed pores were packed as hcp structure and three dimensionally penetrated through the windows, and the mesopores endowed the porous ceramics surprising high BET surface areas and micropore volumes.

Preparation and Characterization of Nanotitanium Dioxide Coating Film Doped with Fe3+ Ions on Porous Ceramic

The nanotitanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalytic and porous ceramic filtering technique is one of the advanced methods to effectively treat organic wastewater. The TiO2 sol doped with Fe3+ ions was prepared by sol-gel processing. The influences of the process conditions of coating nanophotocatalytic material-Fe3+-TiO2 film on the surface of porous ceramic filter by dipping-lift method on the performance of porous ceramic filter were studied. The porous ceramic filters have two functions at the same time,filtration and photocatalytic degradation. The results of this study showed that the pH and viscosity of the sol,amount of Fe3+ ions doped as well as the coating times greatly affect the quality of coating film,the performance parameters and the photocatalytic activity of the porous ceramic filter. When the pH of the sol is 3-4,the viscosity is about 6 mPa・S,the amount of doped Fe3+ ions is about 2.0 g/L,the porous ceramic filter has been shown to have the best filtering performance and photocatalytic activity. In this condition,the porosity of porous ceramic is about 42.5%,the pore diameter is 8-10μm. The degradation of methyl-orange is 74.76% under lighting for 120 min.
