As is symbolically depicted in the picture, two men show different attitudes towards a fallen bottle. A great deal of water is flowing out of the bottle. The man on the left complains, “it is all done”, with one hand covering one of his eyes. On the contrary, the man on the right is about to pick up the bottle, saying, “it is lucky to have some left”.
In fact, the metaphorical picture intends to reveal that positive attitude is of utmost importance in one’s life. Considering the importance and necessity of this spirit, I feel responsible to discuss it further. To begin with, optimism could be regarded as a traditional Chinese virtue that could be handed down from generation to generation. Furthermore, this character plays an indispensable role in success. It is truly the fundamental attribute of top performers, which separate the high achievers from the rest of the pack. For example, Albert Einstein, honored for his success in the theory of relativism, is always remembered for his optimism, which shines through every chapter of his life.
To sum up, it is imperative for us to take some measures to enhance positive attitude in our society. The time is right for us to take full advantage of ample existing opportunities. We should do our utmost to promote and advocate this spirit. Only in this way can our society become a better place for us to live in. (238 words)
As is symbolically depicted in the picture, a group of graduates are standing at the crossroad. The students who seem very confused are facing four different choices: seeking a job, taking the Graduate School Entrance Exam, studying abroad, and initiating a business. What the picture is trying to convey is reflected in the caption: choices.
In fact, the metaphorical picture intends to reveal that it is very important for college students to make the right choice upon graduation. Considering the significance of this present situation, I feel responsible to discuss it further. To begin with, higher education plays a key role in aiding students’ growth and development. They can get the opportunity to increase their knowledge and learn to be independent. Education is indeed a worthwhile investment. As a result, a number of students would choose to go to graduate school either at home or abroad. Furthermore, young people are under considerable pressure for a living because the competition is increasingly fierce. Many students want to earn money for themselves and their family. Also, there is an increasing upward mobility of the younger generation and dramatic changes in traditional concepts. Consequently, the rest of the students would choose to work for a company or start their own business.
To sum up, in face of this phenomenon, we should be prudent. Given the levels of intelligence and discretion imbued in college students, I am sure that most of them will be able to sidestep the potential drawbacks of their choice, while taking advantage of all its merits. (256 words)
As is symbolically depicted in the picture, two tourists are sitting on a boat and doing sightseeing. While they are enjoying the scenery along the way, they are throwing rubbish into the lake, which is therefore littered with bottles, empty cans, and waste food. What the picture is trying to convey is reflected in the caption: the leftovers of the travel.
In fact, the metaphorical picture intends to reveal that due attention should be given to the environmental protection. Considering the importance of the present situation, I feel responsible to discuss it further. To begin with, higher education should play a key role in aiding students’ growth and development. However, schools nowadays tend to pay special attention to students’ academic scores rather than their morality. This will definitely give rise to the phenomenon depicted in the picture. Furthermore, in recent years, China is marked by rapid economic growth and continuous technological innovation. However, public morality has declined to an extent. More and more people are becoming indifferent to the environment. This phenomenon can be attributed to the lack of well-defined norms of behaviors.
To sum up, environmental protection is caring about ourselves and ensuring environmental sustainability for future generation. The fundamental way in which the government addresses the problem is to raise the public awareness. The mass media should also join in the efforts in educating the citizens. Only through concerted steps can our society have more peace and harmony. (240 words)
This……could support the safety net……to help families weather bad times.
For younger families, the picture is not any better.
(1)名词、代词的数和格的构成及其用法;
(2)动词时态、语态的构成及其用法;
(3)形容词与副词的比较级和最高级的构成及其用法;
(4)常用连接词的词义及其用法;
(5)非谓语动词(不定式、动名词、分词)的构成及其用法;
(6)虚拟语气的构成及其用法;
(7)各类从句(定语从句、主语从句、表语从句等)及强调句型的结构及其用法;
并列连词有and,but,or等。
名词性从句由连接词(或关联词)如whether,that,who,whom,whose,which,what,when,where,how,why等引导。

比如,这样的句子Bob?is?young?and?___.?

What is subtly demonstrated in the above drawing is that in front of a desktop sits a fashionable lady who is staring at the screen with shocked expression wearing on cheeks and huge sweat dropping from her forehead. What is spit from the computer is the lengthy Alipay bill, which can almost be spread as long as two meters. The caption above reads that you should keep away from Taobao and cherish your income.
The objective of the drawer is to show us that utmost attention should be paid to shopping online, which has exerted profound impact on the daily life of the average individuals. We can easily recognize its advantages: e-commerce, which is extremely convenient, can save us a great amount of precious time and we can buy products everywhere we want as long as we can surf online. However, for all the advantages mentioned above, online trading is by no means without its limitations: we may be cheated by some online retailers, which might be a potential threat to our bank accounts.
Accordingly, it is imperative for us to take drastic measures. For one thing, we should appeal to the authorities to make strict legislations to severely punish those who deliberately spoil the interests of online customers. For another, we should enhance the awareness of residents that rational purchasing is conducive to our income management. Only in this way can we maximize the merits and minimize the demerits of online purchasing.
Wise people used to say that taking actions is of utmost significance in our daily life. This is most vividly illustrated in the given picture, which shows that two young boys both holding guitar are playing different life situations. The boy on the left is daydreaming about the day he gives a perfect concert and is admired by all the fans, while the boy on the right is practicing the guitar and singing skill persistently.
Studying it further, it is easy to figure out that taking actions is the only way to fulfill our dream. Our country, for example, has developed rapidly in terms of economy and science and technology. We have accomplished in about two decades what other emerging countries used to achieve in a century. There is no denying that it is the perseverance and taking actions that really realize the promise they made. If you never take action to do something, you will never have a chance to win. For example, a great number of students choose to take part in the National Entrance Exam for master’s degree. However, those who dreamed of becoming the postgraduates without taking any actions are even tremble at the thought of taking the exam, most of whom are escaping the classroom when the first exam is over.
In a word, I believe, just like Forrest Gump said, “Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re gonna get.” Unless you have the awareness that action speaks louder than the word.
What is conspicuously presented in the drawing above is a humorous (interesting/ satirical/ harmonious) scene, in which two people are trapped in two large tanks respectively. The most striking feature of the cartoon is the fact that one man, with a swim ring on his neck, struggled to get out of the tank by swimming but failed, while another person on the right chose to break the tank to solve the problem finally. Given its profound social implication (consequences), the phenomenon is well worth our endeavor to explore.
By drawing this cartoon, the author reminds us that due attention should be paid to the significance / importance of innovation, an element which plays an important role in our study and life. Looking around the world, what we are employing, experiencing, and desiring for are from those brilliant ideas. It’s the innovation that steers our society into progressive phases. As good innovators, they will not accept that there is only one way to do anything, rather than search for alternate courses, which may prove easier in the long run and be bound to be more practical. Numerous instances can be given to illustrate the importance of this spirit, from the discovery of Penicillin to the presumption of Universal Gravitation, even from the invention of one appliance to the launch of a spacecraft.
As a consequence, innovation consciousness is badly needed in every aspect of our society. In order to bring out this potential ability, our education system is supposed to be reformed fundamentally, focusing on cultivating inventive mind among elementary students. In addition, those relevant department should form a range of reasonable premium systems and other incentives to encourage and stimulate more people put their wise into reality. In brief, if one person or a nation would like to make continuous improvement, they should bear in mind that only the spirit of innovation can ensure the best prosperity.
In the cartoon presented to us, there are three sportsmen who are stating their declarations for Olympic Games. The first swimmer says: “I don’t care who is Horton. The only thing in my eyes is the gold medal”; In the meantime, the second table tennis player is asking: “Who is going to defeat me?” Similarly, the third one, namely the weight lifter, is demanding another ten Jin of barbell sets.
The illustration tells us a lot about life. An ordinary athlete may harbor the idea that his achievement calls for celebration for he has reached his goal. But an ambitious one will well realize that his success is the starting point for a new challenge. Conspicuously, the way we look at things determines how far we will go. If we feel satisfied with the ability to read and write, perhaps we will not strive to get a college education. Again, if we think a Bachelor's degree is quite enough, we will not take pains to pass the examination for postgraduate. Life is just like an endless competition. If we do not prepare for new races, we are either disqualified from the games or surpassed by others.
Personally, I like this painting. I may have been attending this endless game, but I have been pushed forward by my parents or people around me. From now on, I will become more active and take the initiative, for the caricature has really enlightened me.
(Common as it is, the above picture has deep implication). As is vividly shown in the cartoon, at least five patients are staying in one hospital who are injured because of jay-walking, driving after drinking and disregarding of the laws. If we take a closer watch, it is of little difficulty to find that one police is patiently explicating the traffic laws to one injured person, sitting at a wheel chair which is pushed by one nurse.
There is no doubt that it describes a common phenomenon in our society that traffic problems are increasingly severe. What might trigger this affair? (For my part, the following two are of utmost importance.) For one part, the general public have failed to realize the importance of abiding by the traffic regulations and laws (and a big deal of the attention have been distracted by the so-called “great affair”). Once some drivers easily disregard the traffic signals, so do other drivers who intend to obey the laws. Moreover, the current state of affairs depicted in the drawing, may have been encouraged, though not justified, by the lack of severe legal penalty. If someone does disorderly parking or drive under the influence of alcohol, the punishment is not so harsh that the drivers could afford to learn a heavy lesson from the fine. (If we let this situation continue as it is, ultimately, our society will suffer a great destruction.)
It is advisable for us to take steps to reverse this current evil trend. On one hand, we should cultivate the awareness of people that everyone needs to reflect on his or her uncivilized conducts and strengthen his self-discipline. On the other hand, it is high time that more severe and sound laws and regulations should be introduced to harness and curb this matter. Only in this way, can we crack the hard nut and embrace a bright future.
What is explicitly demonstrated in the above caricature is that there sits an individual by the river bank, fully equipped with a protective mask, who is fishing in the acid rain with an umbrella in his right hand. It is not difficult to notice that what he got from the highly polluted river is a fishbone rather than a real one and noxious gases are pouring into the sky continuously which is already dusky.
What might trigger this phenomenon? Previously, it is widely admitted that the authorities concerned have failed to enact strict legislations and regulations to curb environmental detriment, which has exerted negative impact on the daily life of the average folks. Simultaneously, there is no denying that citizens lack of awareness of protecting the surroundings we are living in, which are vital to us. Ultimately, another contributory factor to this situation is that some folks are tempted by the economic motivation so that they put the environment at risk. .
Accordingly, it is imperative for us to take drastic measures to reverse this disturbing trend. To begin with, relevant laws should be made to severely punish those who deliberately destruct the environment. In addition, the awareness of the public should be cultivated that guarding the circumstance we are dwelling in is protecting our own homeland. Only by enforcing these actions, can we effectively, efficiently and eventually crack this hard nut and embrace a promising community.
What is vividly revealed in the picture is that water is being reused in daily life at home. After washing rice, the water can be used to wash vegetables and then clean the mop and the toilet. What a harmonious scene it is!
It is not difficult to find that what the picture intends to express is the importance of saving and protecting resources. On the one hand, as we all know, water resource is limited and water shortage is still a serious problem threatening the existence and survival of the whole human being. On the other hand, the phenomenon of wasting water can still be easily found anywhere in our daily life. For example, water taps are frequently left on by careless users. Someone even assumes that they have the right to waste water because they pay for it o that it has nothing to do with others. In fact, so precious water is that we cannot afford to waste it. Water resource is not only indispensable in our daily life but also in the industry and agriculture. It is hard to imagine what the world would be like when there I is no more water.
It is fortunate that now the public is starting to pay attention. But, this is not adequate. As is shown in the above picture, what we need is more actions to save and protect resources! First of all, social environment is shaped by the general public, and the cultivation of conservation-minded society depends on the active involvement of every member of our society, be he old or young. Accordingly, an education campaign should be launched to call on people from all walks of life to save and protect resources. In addition, saving and protecting resources is bound up with our daily life. We, college students, should spare no efforts to save valuable energy and natural resources such as power, water, coal, gas and so on. Only by the joint efforts of the whole society can we create a real conservation-minded society.
Emerging from the cartoon is an eye-catching scene that a professor-like man is trying to plagiarize others' research results without doing any real experiment, while he doesn't feel any guilty about what he has done. Apparently, this drawing reveals the phenomenon of scholar dishonest.
Theoretically, several reasons could trigger this “unhealthy” conduct if our authorities concerned don't pay enough attention to it. To begin with, a host of intellectuals have a growing respect on the so-called “big event” while ignoring the value of doing academic research. Therefore, people would no longer believe what the scientists say. Since scientists are noble elites of society, then the credibility of the whole society would deteriorate and collapse if their words are unreliable. To continue, any behavior has its economic motivation, so does the performance of the character in this drawing. Chasing the higher position in university, scholars have been manipulated by “false hope” and money, since the way of “plagiarism ”, all other factors being equal, can be the short-cut way to be superior in life. Consequently, no issue stands as critical to building up intellectual honesty as eliminating academic plagiarism.
It is, accordingly, imperative for us to take certain steps to reverse this evil trend. Of all steps, to appeal to law might be the efficient way, and maybe the last way to punish those who fail to obey the code of the academic conducts. After all, this world still need more space for the “real” scholar.
What emerges into our sights is a familiar yet far-reaching picture that there are a wide range of reality shows in front of a middle-aged man who, half lying on the sofa, is swinging a remote device in his hand with a confused face, wondering which one is the best to choose.
The meaning revealed by the picture is that reality shows have hit into our common cultural market. On the one hand, not only does this sort of consumer culture drives the improvement of cultural industry, but also it exerts a strong influence on our daily life, such as being informed of local customs and folklore from place to place, relieving the pressure derived from our working class’ regular work and so on. On the other hand, it is the wide spread of this form of entertainment that makes it difficult to present the real, cultural contents but only stays in the half-hearted nature. What’s worse, what the increasing imitative behaviors brings about, to a new high, is the national over-consumption.
As for me, the type of reality shows is a special product of the economic and social development that produces more benefits but less adverse impact. However, it is imperative for us, common people, to take a rational yet responsible attitude to the life we lead, especially the kind of activity we are obsessed with.
What the picture above illustrates in a straightforward way is the current situation of our traditional Chinese culture. Ironically, the conversation between the boy and his father deserves to think deeply. When asked what these characters are on the painting, the father could not come up with a certain answer, which is ridiculous but thought provoking.
It is mostly likely that by portraying this drawing the author intends to set us thinking more about the losing of traditional culture. Obviously, there are several reasons accounting for the culture recession. To begin with, modern society is filled with all kinds of advanced technologies and vast quantities of information, so that few people will pay attention to those ancient Chinese characters. In addition, people’s awareness of popularizing our national culture is not so strong, which is decisive to the worse condition.
From my perspective, it is imperative for our nation to realize the fact that Chinese culture is the most esteemed culture in the world and should be inherited from generation to generation. For one thing, some effective and feasible measures should be taken to advocate and carry forward the fine culture. For another thing, the effort from our education system is one of the channels to develop and carry forward the proud Chinese culture traditions. Only by the joint effort, can we construct the socialism harmonious society and create civilizations. (229 words).

范文:
The picture showed us a boiling hotpot of various forms of both domestic and alien culture.
There are many things boiled in the pan, such as BuddhaKofu Postmodernism and so on.They
are mixed inthe pan .This pictures is told us that culture mix in our world is trend, no body can
change this ,neither countries nor people.
The hodgepodge could be categorized as literature, moral values and performing arts. The purpose
of the picture is to show us that Chinese and Western culture conflict with each other but also merge
into a unique form to a certain degree, yet the symbolic meanings subtly conveyed should be taken
more seriously. For China, it also can take the main chance to develop. As a human, every one is
exposed in the multifarious culture in the modern society. Maybe you dont agree some of it, but you
must realize that no one can live in a style that is formed one hundred years ago. Every day,
we faces new things, new concepts. If you dont open you mind, learn some things from another
angle, you may out of date.
From what has been discussed above, I strongly stick to the notion that culture mix
is the main stream. Apart from mutual benefits of economic expansion, culture combination also
promote international friendships at home and abroad. Furthermore, they can create a friendly environment to
allow China a better environment of development. Lastly, they also contribute vastly to the world's peace
and prosperity.

A group of friends, boys or girls, are having a dinner party while each one of them is checking messages in their mobile phones without saying a word to one another, leaving the dishes untouched. We are informed that this is a gathering in the era of mobile phone.
The above picture unveils a common social phenomenon and the symbolic meaning of the photo is the effect of the mobile phone on people's way of life. Undoubtedly, the phone provides us with considerable convenience, making many things possible which are beyond our dreams. As a communication tool, the phone makes us closer than ever before by providing immediate communication. Meanwhile, there are negative effects on our personal life. As is shown in the picture, people are imprisoned in their own world! They choose contacting online rather than communicating face to face.
Accordingly, enjoying the convenience provided by the phones, we should bear in mind that human beings are social beings who need real interpersonal interactions! Joint efforts are needed to ensure people to have face-to-face communication! I believe a harmonious relationship between friends is awaiting us if we set aside our mobile phones and enjoy the untouched meal!

Text 3
Up until a few decades ago, our visions of the future were largely - though by no means uniformly - glowingly positive. Science and technology would cure all the ills of humanity, leading to lives of fulfillment and opportunity for all.
Now utopia has grown unfashionable, as we have gained a deeper appreciation of the range of threats facing us, from asteroid strike to epidemic flu and to climate change. You might even be tempted to assume that humanity has little future to look forward to.
But such gloominess is misplaced. The fossil record shows that many species have endured for millions of years - so why shouldn't we? Take a broader look at our species' place in the universe, and it becomes clear that we have an excellent chance of surviving for tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of years. Look up Homo sapiens in the “Red List” of threatened species of the International Union for the Conversation of Nature (IUCN) ,and you will read: “Listed as Least Concern as the species is very widely distributed, adaptable, currently increasing, and there are no major threats resulting in an overall population decline.”
So what does our deep future hold? A growing number of researchers and organizations are now thinking seriously about that question. For example, the Long Now Foundation has its flagship project a medical clock that is designed to still be marking time thousands of years hence.
Perhaps willfully, it may be easier to think about such lengthy timescales than about the more immediate future. The potential evolution of today's technology, and its social consequences, is dazzlingly complicated, and it's perhaps best left to science fiction writers and futurologists to explore the many possibilities we can envisage. That's one reason why we have launched Arc, a new publication dedicated to the near future.
But take a longer view and there is a surprising amount that we can say with considerable assurance. As so often, the past holds the key to the future: we have now identified enough of the long-term patterns shaping the history of the planet, and our species, to make evidence-based forecasts about the situations in which our descendants will find themselves.
This long perspective makes the pessimistic view of our prospects seem more likely to be a passing fad. To be sure, the future is not all rosy. But we are now knowledgeable enough to reduce many of the risks that threatened the existence of earlier humans, and to improve the lot of those to come.
31. Our vision of the future used to be inspired by
[A] our desire for lives of fulfillment
[B] our faith in science and technology
[C] our awareness of potential risks
[D] our belief in equal opportunity
32. The IUCN’s “Red List” suggest that human being are
[A] a sustained species
[B] a threaten to the environment
[C] the world’s dominant power
[D] a misplaced race
33. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 5?
[A] Arc helps limit the scope of futurological studies.
[B] Technology offers solutions to social problem.
[C] The interest in science fiction is on the rise.
[D] Our Immediate future is hard to conceive.
34. To ensure the future of mankind, it is crucial to
[A] explore our planet’s abundant resources
[B] adopt an optimistic view of the world
[C] draw on our experience from the past
[D] curb our ambition to reshape history

Text 4
On a five to three vote, the Supreme Court knocked out much of Arizona’s immigration law Monday-a modest policy victory for the Obama Administration. But on the more important matter of the Constitution, the decision was an 8-0 defeat for the Administration’s effort to upset the balance of power between the federal government and the states.
In Arizona v. United States, the majority overturned three of the four contested provisions of Arizona’s controversial plan to have state and local police enforce federal immigration law. The Constitutional principles that Washington alone has the power to “establish a uniform Rule of Naturalization ”and that federal laws precede state laws are noncontroversial . Arizona had attempted to fashion state policies that ran parallel to the existing federal ones.
Justice Anthony Kennedy, joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and the Court’s liberals, ruled that the state flew too close to the federal sun. On the overturned provisions the majority held the congress had deliberately “occupied the field” and Arizona had thus intruded on the federal’s privileged powers.
However, the Justices said that Arizona police would be allowed to verify the legal status of people who come in contact with law enforcement. That’s because Congress has always envisioned joint federal-state immigration enforcement and explicitly encourages state officers to share information and cooperate with federal colleagues.
Two of the three objecting Justice-Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas-agreed with this Constitutional logic but disagreed about which Arizona rules conflicted with the federal statute. The only major objection came from Justice Antonin Scalia, who offered an even more robust defense of state privileges going back to the Alien and Sedition Acts.
The 8-0 objection to President Obama turns on what Justice Samuel Alito describes in his objection as “a shocking assertion of federal executive power”. The White House argued that Arizona’s laws conflicted with its enforcement priorities, even if state laws complied with federal statutes to the letter. In effect, the White House claimed that it could invalidate any otherwise legitimate state law that it disagrees with.
Some powers do belong exclusively to the federal government, and control of citizenship and the borders is among them. But if Congress wanted to prevent states from using their own resources to check immigration status, it could. It never did so. The administration was in essence asserting that because it didn’t want to carry out Congress’s immigration wishes, no state should be allowed to do so either. Every Justice rightly rejected this remarkable claim.
36. Three provisions of Arizona’s plan were overturned because they
[A] deprived the federal police of Constitutional powers.
[B] disturbed the power balance between different states.
[C] overstepped the authority of federal immigration law.
[D] contradicted both the federal and state policies.
37. On which of the following did the Justices agree, according to Paragraph4?
[A] Federal officers’ duty to withhold immigrants ‘information.
[B] States’ independence from federal immigration law.
[C] States’ legitimate role in immigration enforcement.
[D] Congress’s intervention in immigration enforcement.
38. It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that the Alien and Sedition Acts
[A] violated the Constitution.
[B] undermined the states’ interests.
[C] supported the federal statute.
[D] stood in favor of the states.
39. The White House claims that its power of enforcement
[A] outweighs that held by the states.
[B] is dependent on the states’ support.
[C] is established by federal statutes.
[D] rarely goes against state laws.
40. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
[A] Immigration issues are usually decided by Congress.
[B] Justices intended to check the power of the Administration.
[C] Justices wanted to strengthen its coordination with Congress.
[D] The Administration is dominant over immigration issues.

The social sciences are flourishing. As of , there were almost half a million professional social scientists from all fields in the world, working both inside and outside academia. According to the World Social Science Report , the number of social-science students worldwide has swollen by about 11% every year since .
Yet this enormous resource in not contributing enough to today’s global challenges including climate change, security, sustainable development and health.(41)______Humanity has the necessary agro-technological tools to eradicate hunger, from genetically engineered crops to artificial fertilizers . Here, too, the problems are social: the organization and distribution of food, wealth and prosperity.
(42)____This is a shame―the community should be grasping the opportunity to raise its influence in the real world. To paraphrase the great social scientist Joseph Schumpeter: there is no radical innovation without creative destruction.
Today, the social sciences are largely focused on disciplinary problems and internal scholarly debates, rather than on topics with external impact.
Analyses reveal that the number of papers including the keywords “environmental changed” or “climate change” have increased rapidly since ,(43)____
When social scientists do tackle practical issues ,their scope is often local: Belgium is interested mainly in the effects of poverty on Belgium for example .And whether the community’s work contributes much to an overall accumulation of knowledge is doubtful.
The problem is not necessarily the amount of available funding (44)____this is an adequate amount so long as it is aimed in the right direction. Social scientists who complain about a lack of funding should not expect more in today’s economic climate.
The trick is to direct these funds better. The European Union Framework funding programs have long had a category specifically targeted at social scientists. This year, it was proposed that system be changed: Horizon ,a new program to be enacted in ,would not have such a category ,This has resulted in protests from social scientists. But the intention is not to neglect social science; rather, the complete opposite. (45)____That should create more collaborative endeavors and help to develop projects aimed directly at solving global problems.
[A] It could be that we are evolving two communities of social scientists: one that is discipline-oriented and publishing in highly specialized journals, and one that is problem-oriented and publishing elsewhere, such as policy briefs.
[B] However, the numbers are still small: in 2010, about 1,600 of the 100,000 social-sciences papers published globally included one of these Keywords.
[C] the idea is to force social to integrate their work with other categories, including health and demographic change food security, marine research and the bio-economy, clear, efficient energy; and inclusive, innovative and secure societies.
[D] the solution is to change the mindset of the academic community, and what it considers to be its main goal. Global challenges and social innovation ought to receive much more attention from scientists, especially the young ones.
[E] These issues all have root causes in human behavior. All require behavioral change and social innovations, as well as technological development. Stemming climate change, for example, is as much about changing consumption patterns and promoting tax acceptance as it is about developing clean energy.
[F] Despite these factors, many social scientists seem reluctant to tackle such problems. And in Europe, some are up in arms over a proposal to drop a specific funding category for social-science research and to integrate it within cross-cutting topics of sustainable development.
[G]During the late 1990s , national spending on social sciences and the humanities as a percentage of all research and development funds-including government, higher education, non-profit and corporate -varied from around 4% to 25%; in most European nations , it is about 15%.

Text 1
Gene therapy and gene?based drugs are two ways we could benefit from our growing mastery of genetic science. But there will be others as well. Here is one of the remarkable therapies on the cutting edge of genetic research that could make their way into mainstream medicine in the coming years.
While it’s true that just about every cell in the body has the instructions to make a complete human, most of those instructions are inactivated, and with good reason: the last thing you want for your brain cells is to start churning out stomach acid or your nose to turn into a kidney. The only time cells truly have the potential to turn into any and all body parts is very early in a pregnancy, when so?called stem cells haven’t begun to specialize.
Yet this untapped potential could be a terrific boon to medicine. Most diseases involve the death of healthy cells ― brain cells in Alzheimer’s, cardiac cells in heart disease, pancreatic cells in diabetes, to name a few; if doctors could isolate stem cells, then direct their growth, they might be able to furnish patients with healthy replacement tissue.
It was incredibly difficult, but last fall scientists at the University of Wisconsin managed to isolate stem cells and get them to grow into neural, gut, muscle and bone cells. The process still can’t be controlled, and may have unforeseen limitations; but if efforts to understand and master stem?cell development prove successful, doctors will have a therapeutic tool of incredible power.
The same applies to cloning, which is really just the other side of the coin; true cloning, as first shown with the sheep Dolly two years ago, involves taking a developed cell and reactivating the genome within, resetting its developmental instructions to a pristine state. Once that happens, the rejuvenated cell can develop into a full?fledged animal, genetically identical to its parent.
For agriculture, in which purely physical characteristics like milk production in a cow or low fat in a hog have real market value, biological carbon copies could become routine within a few years. This past year scientists have done for mice and cows what Ian Wilmut did for Dolly, and other creatures are bound to join the cloned menagerie in the coming year.
Human cloning, on the other hand, may be technically feasible but legally and emotionally more difficult. Still, one day it will happen. The ability to reset body cells to a pristine, undeveloped state could give doctors exactly the same advantages they would get from stem cells: the potential to make healthy body tissues of all sorts, and thus to cure disease. That could prove to be a true “miracle cure.”
21.The writer holds that the potential to make healthy body tissues will
[A] aggravate moral issues of human cloning.
[B] bring great benefits to human beings.
[C] help scientists decode body instructions.
[D] involve employing surgical instruments.
22.The word “rejuvenated” (Para. 5) most probably means

23.The research at the University of Wisconsin is mentioned to show
[A] the isolation of stem cells. [B] the effects of gene therapies.
[C] the advantages of human cloning. [D] the limitations of tissue replacements.
24.Which of the following is true according to the text?
[A] The principle of gene therapy is applicable to that of cloning.
[B] The isolation of stem cells is too difficult to be feasible.
[C] It is reasonable for all body instructions to be activated.
[D] Cloned animals will eventually take control of the world.
25.Towards the genetic research, the author’s attitude can best be said to be that of
[A] Frustration. [B] Indifference. [C] Amazement. [D] Opposition.
Text 2
What our society suffers from most today is the absence of consensus about what it and life in it ought to be; such consensus cannot be gained from society’s present stage, or from fantasies about what it ought to be. For that the present is too close and too diversified, and the future too uncertain, to make believable claims about it. A consensus in the present hence can be achieved only through a shared understanding of the past, as Homer’s epics informed those who lived centuries later what it meant to be Greek, and by what i

The scores were 15 used in conjunction with an applicant’s score on the Graduate Management Admission Test, or GMAT, a standardized exam which is 16 out of 800 points, to make a decision on whether to accept him or her.
Dr. Simonsohn found if the score of the previous candidate in a daily series of interviewees was 0.75 points or more higher than that of the one 17 that, then the score for the next applicant would 18 by an average of 0.075 points. This might sound small, but to 19 the effects of such a decrease a candidate could need 30 more GMAT points than would otherwise have been 20 .

Text 1
In the film version of The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep, scolds her unattractive assistant for imagining that high fashion doesn’t affect her, Priestly explains how the deep blue color of the assistant’s sweater descended over the years from fashion shows to departments stores and to the bargain bin in which the poor girl doubtless found her garment.
This top-down conception of the fashion business couldn’t be more out of date or at odds with the feverish would be described in Overdressed, Elizabeth Cline’s three-year indictment of “fast fashion”. In the last decade or so, advances in technology have allowed mass-market labels such as Zara, H&M, and Uniqlo to react to trends more quickly and anticipate demand more precisely. Quicker turnarounds mean less wasted inventory, more frequent release, and more profit. These labels encourage style-conscious consumers to see clothes as disposable-meant to last only a wash or two, although they don’t advertise that Cand to renew their wardrobe every few weeks. By offering on-trend items at dirt-cheap prices, Cline argues, these brands have hijacked fashion cycles, shaking an industry long accustomed to a seasonal pace.
The victims of this revolution, of course, are not limited to designers. For H&M to offer a $5.95 knit miniskirt in all its 2,300-pius stores around the world, it must rely on low-wage overseas labor, order in volumes that strain natural resources, and use massive amounts of harmful chemicals.
Overdressed is the fashion world’s answer to consumer-activist bestsellers like Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma. “Mass-produced clothing, like fast food, fills a hunger and need, yet is non-durable and wasteful,” Cline argues. Americans, she finds, buy roughly 20 billion garments a year C about 64 items per person C and no matter how much they give away, this excess leads to waste.
Towards the end of Overdressed, Cline introduced her ideal, a Brooklyn woman named Sarah Kate Beaumont, who since has made all of her own clothes C and beautifully. But as Cline is the first to note, it took Beaumont decades to perfect her craft; her example can’t be knocked off.
Though several fast-fashion companies have made efforts to curb their impact on labor and the environment C including H&M, with its green Conscious Collection line CCline believes lasting change can only be effected by the customer. She exhibits the idealism common to many advocates of sustainability, be it in food or in energy. Vanity is a constant; people will only start shopping more sustainably when they can’t afford not to.
21. Priestly criticizes her assistant for her
[A] poor bargaining skill.
[B] insensitivity to fashion.
[C] obsession with high fashion.
[D] lack of imagination.
22. According to Cline, mass-market labels urge consumers to
[A] combat unnecessary waste.
[B] shut out the feverish fashion world.
[C] resist the influence of advertisements.
[D] shop for their garments more frequently.
23. The word “indictment” (Line 3, Para.2) is closest in meaning to
[A] accusation.
[B] enthusiasm.
[C] indifference.
[D] tolerance.
24. Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?
[A] Vanity has more often been found in idealists.
[B] The fast-fashion industry ignores sustainability.
[C] People are more interested in unaffordable garments.
[D] Pricing is vital to environment-friendly purchasing.
25. What is the subject of the text?
[A] Satire on an extravagant lifestyle.
[B] Challenge to a high-fashion myth.
[C] Criticism of the fast-fashion industry.
[D] Exposure of a mass-market secret.
Text 2
An old saying has it that half of all advertising budgets are wasted-the trouble is, no one knows which half. In the internet age, at least in theory, this fraction can be much reduced. By watching what people search for, click on and say online, companies can aim “behavioural” ads at those most likely to buy.
In the past couple of weeks a quarrel has illustrated the value to advertisers of such fine-grained information: Should advertisers assume that people are happy to be tracked and sent behavioural ads? Or should they have explicit permission?
In December America's Federal Trade Commission (FTC) proposed adding a “do not track ”(DNT) option to internet browsers ,so that users could tell advertisers that they did not want to be followed .Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Apple's Safari both offer DNT ;Google's Chrome is due to do so this year. In February the FTC and Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) agreed that the industry would get cracking on responding to DNT requests.
On May 31st Microsoft Set off the row: It said that Internet Explorer 10, the version due to appear windows 8, would have DNT as a default.
It is not yet clear how advertisers will respond. Getting a DNT signal does not oblige anyone to stop tracking, although some companies have promised to do so. Unable to tell whether someone really objects to behavioural ads or whether they are sticking with Microsoft’s default, some may ignore a DNT signal and press on anyway.
Also unclear is why Microsoft has gone it alone. After all, it has an ad business too, which it says will comply with DNT requests, though it is still working out how. If it is trying to upset Google, which relies almost wholly on default will become the norm. DNT does not seem an obviously huge selling point for windows 8-though the firm has compared some of its other products favourably with Google's on that count before. Brendon Lynch, Microsoft's chief privacy officer, blogged: “we believe consumers should have more control.” Could it really be that simple?
26. It is suggested in paragraph 1 that “behavioural” ads help advertisers to:
[A] ease competition among themselves
[B] lower their operational costs
[C] avoid complaints from consumers
[D] provide better online services
27. “The industry” (Line 6,Para.3) refers to:
[A] online advertisers
[B] e-commerce conductors
[C] digital information analysis
[D] internet browser developers
28. Bob Liodice holds that setting DNT as a default
[A] many cut the number of junk ads
[B] fails to affect the ad industry
[C] will not benefit consumers
[D] goes against human nature
29. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph.6?
[A] DNT may not serve its intended purpose
[B] Advertisers are willing to implement DNT
[C] DNT is losing its popularity among consumers
[D] Advertisers are obliged to offer behavioural ads
30. The author's attitude towards what Brendon Lynch said in his blog is one of:
[A] indulgence
[B] understanding
[C] appreciation
[D] skepticism

Text 1
First two hours , now three hours―this is how far in advance authorities are recommending people show up to catch a domestic flight , at least at some major U.S. airports with increasingly massive security lines.
Americans are willing to tolerate time-consuming security procedures in return for increased safety. The crash of Egypt Air Flight 804,which terrorists may have downed over the Mediterranean Sea ,provides another tragic reminder of why. But demanding too much of air travelers or providing too little security in return undermines public support for the process. And it should: Wasted time is a drag on Americans’ economic and private lives, not to mention infuriating.
Last year, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) found in a secret check that undercover investigators were able to sneak weapons---both fake and real―past airport security nearly every time they tried .Enhanced security measures since then, combined with a rise in airline travel due to the improving Chicago’s O’Hare International .It is not yet clear how much more effective airline security has become―but the lines are obvious.
Part of the issue is that the government did not anticipate the steep increase in airline travel , so the TSA is now rushing to get new screeners on the line. Part of the issue is that airports have only so much room for screening lanes. Another factor may be that more people are trying to overpack their carry-on bags to avoid checked-baggage fees, though the airlines strongly dispute this.
There is one step the TSA could take that would not require remodeling airports or rushing to hire: Enroll more people in the PreCheck program. PreCheck is supposed to be a win-win for travelers and the TSA. Passengers who pass a background check are eligible to use expedited screening lanes. This allows the TSA wants to enroll 25 million people in PreCheck.
It has not gotten anywhere close to that, and one big reason is sticker shock. Passengers must pay $85 every five years to process their background checks. Since the beginning, this price tag has been PreCheck’s fatal flaw. Upcoming reforms might bring the price to a more reasonable level. But Congress should look into doing so directly, by helping to finance PreCheck enrollment or to cut costs in other ways.
The TSA cannot continue diverting resources into underused PreCheck lanes while most of the traveling public suffers in unnecessary lines. It is long past time to make the program work.
21. the crash of Egypt Air Flight 804 is mentioned to
[A] stress the urgency to strengthen security worldwide.
[B] highlight the necessity of upgrading major US airports.
[C] explain Americans’ tolerance of current security checks.

[B] The declining efficiency of the TSA.
[C] An increase in the number of travelers.
[D] Frequent unexpected secret checks.

23.The word “expedited” (Line 4, Para.5) is closest in meaning to
[A] faster.
[B] quieter.
[C] wider.
