Although it does contain some pioneering ideas, one would hardly characterize the work as BLANK。

A. orthodox

B. eccentric

C. original

D. trifling

E. conventional

F. innovative

Researchers who study circadian rhythms have found that the physiological processes of animals and plants are neither independent of, nor entirely ___________ external stimuli, such as light and temperature, during a given 24-hour period.

A. imperiled by

B. analogous to

C. coincident with

D. perturbed by

E. appurtenant to

F. concomitant with

judicious[英][d?u:?d???s] [美][d?u?d???s]

adj. Com]

judiciously

Modern fertilisers should be used judiciously.

His decision to give up drug trafficking is judicious.

He was curious to see paris by night with clearer and more judicious eyes than those of other days.

They made judicious use of government incentives.

A judicious choice, decision, remark.

It would be judicious to remain silent.

1. Vain and prone to violence, Caravaggio could not handle success: the more his (1)__________ as an artist increased, the more (2)__________ his life became.

Blank (1) Blank (2)

A. temperance 节制 D. tumultuous 纷乱的

2. While in many ways their personalities could not have been more different - she was ebullient where he was glum, relaxed where he was awkward, garrulous where he was ____- they were surprisingly well suited.

A. solicitous

B. munificent

C. irresolute

D. laconic

E. fastidious

F. taciturn

简洁的:laconic =succinct=pithy=terse=concise

冗长的: wordy=verbose=prolix

话少: taciturn=reticent

话多(褒): voluble=talkative 健谈的

In ---------- nature, myths use ---------- reasoning, relating the unfamiliar to the familiar by means of likeness.

(A) observing ... logical

(B) appreciating ... irrational

(C) disclosing ... metonymic

(D) interpreting ... analogical

(E) seizing ... fanciful

(例:The pen is mightier that the sword.

Brutus is often held up as the embodiment of ______–-yet, while it is true that he deceived his friend, Julius Caesar, one must not forget that Caesar had become both a danger to himself and the Republic.

(A) wisdom

(B) prudence

(C) treachery

(D) selflessness

(E) perfidy

(F) cowardice

The most technologically advanced societies have been responsible for the greatest ----------; indeed, savagery seems to be in direct proportion to -----.

(A) wars ... viciousness

(B) catastrophes ... ill-will

(C) atrocities ... development

(D) inventions ... know-how

(E) triumphs ... civilization

atrocities ... development。

triumph: 1.

37.5. Although some consider forcefulness and persistence to be two traits desirable to the same deGREe, I think that making a violent effort is much less useful than maintaining a steady one.

58.3. Joe spoke of superfluous and vital matters with exactly the same deGREe of intensity, as though for him serious mattered neither more nor less than did trivialities.

9.2. A perennial goal in zoology is to infer function from structure, relating the behavior of am organism to its physical form and cellular organization.

11.7. When theories formerly considered to be disinterested in their scientific objectivity are found instead to reflect a consistent observational and evaluative bias, then the presumed neutrality of science gives way to the recognition that categories of knowledge are human construction.

The most vivid expression of such errors occurs in genetically identical( isogenic ) organisms. Even when reared under the same conditions, isogenic organisms are rarely exact copies of one another, and their differences have revealed much about the random variations that result from an organism’s limited supply of genetic information. In isogenic Daphniae, for example, even though the position, size, and branching pattern of each optic neuron are remarkably constant, there is some variability in connectivity, and the number of synapses varies GREatly. This variability is probably the result of random scatter beyond the resolution of genetic control and is best termed “imprecision”, since its converse, the deGREe of clustering about a mean, is conventionally, called “precision”.

A restaurant’s menu is generally reflected in its décor; however, despite this restaurant’s ___ appearance it is pedestrian in the menu it offers.

A. elegant B. tawdry C. modern D. traditional E. conventional F. chic

28、Manipulating laboratory tissue cultures with hormones is one thing; using hormones to treat human beings, however, is contingent on whether hormones that _______ in the laboratory can affect _________ organisms, and in predictable ways.

(A) develop...similar

(B) succeed...simple

(C) fail...cellular

(D) work...whole

(E) reproduce...unknown

29、Contrary to the popular conception that it is powered by conscious objectivity, science often operates through error, happy accidents, ______ and persistence in spite of mistakes.

(A) facts

(B) controls

(C) hunches

(D) deductions

(E) calculations

30、The well-trained engineer must understand fields as diverse as physics, economics, geology, and sociology; thus, an overly _________engineering curriculum should be avoided.

(A) narrow

(B) innovative

(C) competitive

(D) rigorous

(E) academic

32、The idealized paintings of nature produced in the eighteenth century are evidence that the medieval_________natural settings had been _______ and that the outdoors now could be enjoyed without trepidation.

(A) fear of...exorcised

(B) concerns about...regained

(C) affection for...surmounted

(D) disinterest in...alleviated

(E) enthusiasm for...confronted

33、Art _________ science, but that does not mean that the artist must also be a scientist; an artist uses the fruits of science but need not _________ the theories from which they derive.

(A) precedes...anticipate

(B) incorporates...understand

(C) transcends...abandon

(D) imitates...repudiate

(E) resembles...contest

空格 2 填入一个动词,表示”艺术家(artist)“对”理论(theories)“做的动作,应该体现”艺术家不需要成为科学家(that does not mean that the artist must also be a scientist)“的含义,所以空格 2 要填入”科学家应该对理论作的动作“。

34、Because of its lack of theaters, the city came, ironically, to be viewed as an _________ theater town, and that reputation led entrepreneurs to believe that it would be _________ to build new theaters there.

(A) unprofitable...riskywww.Examw.com

(C) unappreciated..difficult

(D) unlikely...appropriate

(E) unimpressed...shrewd

35、By idiosyncratically refusing to dismiss an insubordinate member of his staff, the manager not only _________established policy, but he also _________ his heretofore good chances for promotion.

(A) simple

(B) controversial

(C) sordid

(D) comfortable

(E) discourteous

(A) honor

(B) repudiate

(C) condone

(D) placate

(E) emulate

根据前面的”新的语言来批判老的(a new language to discredit the old)“也可以得到同样的答案。

(B) imposture...undermine

(C) affectation...jeopardize

(D) candor...enhance

(E) mimicry...efface

however 表示前后转折,in others' esteem 和 one's standing 语义对应,所以空格 2 表达”降低(lower)“的反义即可。

因果关系:because, in that, for, therefore, thus, accordingly, consequently, hence, given, so…that, so…as to, when…then, as long as, in order to……

转折关系:albeit, but, although, despite, however, in spite of, nevertheless, notwithstanding, while, whatever, regardless, even though, even if, yet……

对比关系:in contrast, on the contrary, far from, on the other hand, rather than, instead of, not…but, paradoxically, ironically, surprisingly, unexpectedly……

Johnson never _____ to ignore the standards of decent conduct mandated by company policy if _____ compliance with instructions from his superiors enabled him to do so, whatever the effects on his subordinates.

A. designed tacit

B. attempted halfhearted

C. intended direct

D. scrupled literal

E. wished feigned

Although it does contain some pioneering ideas, one would hardly characterize the work as BLANK。

A. orthodox

B. eccentric

C. original

D. trifling

E. conventional

F. innovative

To the casual observer, the desert appears ____ place; those who look deeper, however, discover that it supports a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life.

A. a verdant

B. an arid

C. a desolate

D. a dessicated

E. an inhospitable

F. a lush

While traveling to the spa’s remote location could be hectic, visitors more than made up for the stress by unwinding in a supremely ____ environment.

A. effusive

B. pacific

C. elegant

D. luxurious

E. placid

F. blithe

The ---------- of mass literacy coincided with the first industrial revolution; in turn, the new expansion in literacy, as well as cheaper printing, helped nurture the ---------- of popular literature.

(A) building ... mistrust

(B) reappearance ... display

(C) receipt ... source

(D) selection ... influence

(E) emergence ... rise

Every novel invites us to enter a world that is initially strange; our gradual and selective orientation to its manners --------- the infant’s --------- to their environment.

(A) imitates ... welcome

(B) completes ... introduction

(C) resembles ... adjustment

(D) alters ... blindness

(E) reinforces ... resistance

orientation: 1.

1:To believe that a culture’s achievement can be measured by the --- ---- of its written material requires one to accept that a page of junk mail is as ------- as a page of great literature.

A、nature.. readable B、quality.. prevalent

C、timelessness.. understandable

D、applicability.. eloquent E、volume.. valuable

Exterminator: Using poisoned food is the most effective tactic for combating a mouse infestation. The mouse will carry the food back to the nest, causing all of the mice to die, while a trap will kill only the one mouse that falls into it. If all signs of the mice disappear for three consecutive weeks after poisoned food is used, the homeowner can be sure that the poison was successful in eradicating the mice.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously calls into question the exterminator’s claim that the absence of signs for three weeks means the mice have been eradicated by the poison?

(A) Because mice hide whenever they sense humans, it is very difficult to see or hear mice even when there is an active infestation.

(B) It is more humane to use live-catch? traps that allow homeowners to release the still-living mice outside.

(C) In the spring, many mice that nest in houses begin foraging for food outside and do not return to the comfort of the house until the fall or winter.

(D) There are several different kinds of poison that could be used, some of which are more effective than others.

(E) It sometimes takes longer than three weeks for all of the mice to ingest and die from the poison.

Although the prevailing supposition has been that it is too hot for microorganisms to survive deep below the Earth's surface, some scientists argue that there are living communities of microorganisms there that have been cut off from surface life for millions of years. These scientists base their argument on the discovery of living microorganisms in samples of material that were taken from holes drilled as deep as 1.74 miles.

The scientists' argument depends on which of the following assumptions?

(A)The microorganisms brought up were of a species that is related to those previously known to science.

(B)No holes have been drilled into the Earth's surface to a distance deeper than 1.74 miles

(C)The microorganisms did not come from surface soil that came into contact with the drilling equipment.

(D) The stratum from which the samples came has been below the surface of the Earth ever since the Earth came into existence.

(E) The temperature at the bottom of the holes drilled was not significantly hotter than that of the hottest spots on the Earth's surface.

Certain extremely harmful bacteria found only in sewage are difficult to detect directly. Testing for E. coli, an easily detected and less harmful type of bacteria, in ocean water would be a reliable way of determining whether or not these more harmful bac-teria are present, since ocean water contains E. Coli only if the water is contaminated with sewage that contains the harmful bacteria.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?

(A) There are many different strains of the E. coli bacteria, and only some of these strains are harmful.

(B) Some types of bacteria found in sewage are neither disease-causing nor difficult to detect directly.

(C) Some of the types of bacteria found in sewage along with E. coli are not harmful to people unless the bacteria are ingested in large quantities.

(D) E. coli dies out much more quickly than some of the more harmful bacteria found in sewage and then can no longer be easily detected.

(E) Some of the types of bacteria found in sewage along with E. coli reproduce at a slower rate than E. coli.
