走在人行道上，有辆计程车扫着我的手臂飞过，马上又被红灯挡住。我生气地走过去，要他摇下窗户，说：“你这样开车太不尊重行人；我们的社会不要你这样没有水准的公民……”很可笑的，知识分子的调调，我知道。灯绿了，这个司机把车停到街口，推开车门走了…来，手里拿着一根两尺长的铁棍，向我走来……分析一下这些经验，造成我“生气”失败的原因大致有三个：第一，这个社会有太多暴戾的人，不可理喻。当司机拿着铁棒向我走来的时候，我只能默默地走开。第二，我们的法令不全。老虎如果没有立法来保护，跟唯利是图的，人谈人道与生态毫无意义。第三，执法的人姑息。明令摊贩不准随地设摊、污染环境，但是当执法人本身都观念不清的时候，你怎么办？这些都造成我的'失败，可是，你知道吗？这些，还不是最主要的原因。最主要的原因是“生气”的人太少。如果打电话到环保局去的不止我一个，而是一天有两百通电话、三百封信，你说环保局还能支吾其事吗？如果对分局长抗议的不止我一个，而是每一个不甘心受气的市民――他还能执迷不悟地说“台湾实情如此”吗？如果那个养狗的人家，每天都有路人对他说：“换个笼子吧！”他还能视若无睹吗？如果叫阿旺的这个人一插队，就受人指责，一丢垃圾，就遭人抗议，阿旺一天能出几次丑呢？想一想，在一个只能装十只鸡的笼子里塞进一百只鸡，会是什么光景？台湾，就是这样一个笼子；你与我就是这笼子里掐着脖子、透不过气来的鸡。我们既不能换一个较大的笼子，又不能杀掉一半的鸡（不过，我们混乱的交通倒是很有效率地在为我们淘汰人口）。在这种情况之下，如果要维持一点基本的人的尊严，我们就不得不仰靠一个合理的社会秩序。这个社会秩序不仅只要求我们自己不去做害人利己的事，还要求我们制止别人做害人利己的事。你自己不做恶事才只尽了一半的责任，另一半的责任是，你不能姑息、容忍别人来破坏这个社会秩序。
